Or you could get a new shape Mazda6 awesome car, cheap tax, ultra reliable and very economical and cheaper and better looking than the Accord:).
ha ha, in your opinion, i like the new accord, i think it looks good. the old estate looked a bit odd, i had the old saloon and loved it. Having used the new estate once or twice, and having been in my uncles Mazda 6 estate, the accord felt wider. both are great cars though...0 -
I think the Prius is overpriced for what it is and a good diesel will match it for economy, or come close enough for it not to be an issue.
Octavia is a good shout, Mondeo is also good, I am very happy with my '04 plate one and the Passat (Bluemotion) worth a look as well.:A0 -
Fab - do you know what mpg is does...?
no idea, my old one, 2.2 diesel, would do 45 ish around town, on the motorway about 60plus i reckon. I never calcluated it, one one tank of fuel when i went to Scotland last year i did 800-900 miles, that was mostly on cruise control, 80mph up m6 from junction 7, then 70ish dependant on traffic to South Ballachulish, then trips and excursions around the highlands...
i imagine the newer model, in your price range, should be better, 6 speed box (mine was 5) and Honda aim to make their engines greener and more economical all the time.
compare it to the mazda6 though, my uncle chose his mazda over the accord, but he said they are great cars. MPG would have been part of his decision as he does many many miles each year...0 -

Mine is a 59 plate 2.2l 163bhp estate. On local trips it does about 45-50 mpg. My wife uses it mostly for motorway journeys to and from London. She is heavy footed and manages around 50 mpg:D.
I've used it for long motorway cruises and at sensible (ie legal) speeds it will easily do 55 mpg.
I do calculate the consumption every time I fill up.
Ours has done about 29,000 miles since Sept 2009. Nothing has broken, gone wrong, needed replacing etc.etc. The same as every other Mazda I've had.
That is not to knock the Honda. It is an excellent car. I am just, personally, not taken by the styling and it is a bit pricier when new.0 -
it's worth checking specs of what you get, i know with my uncle's mazda he got a lot of car for his money, in fact i think he has every option possible and it worked out cheaper than other cars he was considering (BMW, Audi etc).0

Is anyone an expert with Hybrids.
Does anyone know the average MPG.
Would they reccomend them.
I have heard the batteries are very costly.0 -
With regards to a saloon car.0

To me Hybrids are only any use if you plan to use them off the battery and for the low miles you get on them I personally don't think they are worth it. The Prius to me is a nice car but as others have said a good diesel does better, the Prius from what i've read is supposed to get 60 odd mpg, but rarely gets better than 50. I have a Golf Bluemotion(not what youre looking for) I get about 65mpg on my usual 30 mile trip from home to Glasgow, on a long run with sensible driving I can get over 80mpg.
None of the cars mentioned above can be written out of the argument easily they all have good merits, The Accord estate I had looked at, it claims high mpg but doens't come close to it. I think Mondeo does well and Mazda's are renowned for it.
Others perhaps worth looking at although not sure if they will suit are the Peuguot 5008 and 3008 hybrids, but again I'm not sure if they're worthy, to me you'd have extra costs in servicing as you have the batteries AND conventional engine.
Good luck. Thanks to all the competition posters.0
