Has anyone noticed that some of the food stuff in the ethnic section of supermarkets can also be cheaper than their regular aisle?

Rajah Bay Leaves, for example, are 51p (£5.10/100g) and are about three times cheaper than most, ASDA currently sells these.

Edinburgh has a couple of good Chinese supermarkets as well as an Asian supermarket and a few good Asian food shops on Leith Walk. The supermarkets are great and very cheap compared with the usual supermarkets. Also be sure to check the freezer sections as they have some stupendous deals ie frozen parathas, naan bread etc.

Thanks Leithman1, I don't get down to Edinburgh as often as I would like but will make a point of looking out for the ones down Leith Walk the next time I make the trip - as I always make an effort to go and visit the Italian deli down there

  • You can't beat Indian and Chinese supermarkets, they have EVERY ingredient you could possibly want for creating fabulous, tasty far eastern dishes at great prices AND they have yummy pastries, has anyone tried pineapple bread? to die for....x

The one I went to is in Aberdeen, (George St about 50yds up from the Hutcheon St traffic lights/Butchers Arms Pub)

There is also a European supermarket further up on the other side of the street that I had a browse around, only problem I didn't have enough time to have a proper look and try and guess what everything was - its all imported and written in what I presumed is Polish.

The Chinese supermarket I have yet to visit is in 138 Causewayend,

    Have fun. :j

Cheers, will have a mooch if I have the time and energy after being poked at ARi...

Beware of that place, it's illegal I believe to sell things without English translation labelling on so they may not be fit for consumption  if they avoid that legality you have to think what else they may be avoiding!

  • I would definitely recommend going to an Asian shop to buy spices and powders, you get so much more for your money, but I'm never quite sure about the 'fresh' veg. I always try to but Class A at supermarkets, but I never seem to get any good quality veg at any Asian stores I've been to.

Sorry to hear that "being poked" about is your reason for visit, hope you have the interest & energy to shop before or afterwards.

Hadn't thought about the illegal implication, maybe there were notices below in English that identified the products but as I said I really didn't have time do more than browse.

Take care and good luck with your "investigation"
