What on Earth has happened?

OK, I have my suspicions. This is my DD, after all.

She insists that she just turned on the laptop and it was pink, once she mentioned this - three months after it happened - I switched it on and got this image. (Please excuse the bad angle and Futurama on in the background, the speaker was feeding back so it was all I could do to point my mac in the general direction of the laptop to get a sort of picture.

I am not a happy bunny and she thinks I am going to buy her a netbook for Christmas because this has done this out of the blue.

It's a Toshiba Sattelite Pro 450. Was still in warranty when she claims it went wrong. But it isn't now I've found out about it.

Any ideas?

Looks like the screen has been damaged by being dropped or something dropped on it

    dacouch is right

My SIL's laptop was like that the other week....she'd dropped it off the arm of the chair and the screen had broken. £150+ to repair it

    Same sort of thing happened to my Toshiba laptop,I've been told it's either ;

The ribbon connection between the graphics card? & the screen
    The screen itself
    Graphics card

I opened mine & one of the hinges had seized,so it fractured the case as I opened it.

Either of them are,I gather, expensive to fix, almost as much as a new lappy.Does the image tend to fade after a while, sort of gray out?
  • Hmmmm, thought so.

Is this worth my trying to get hold of a replacement LCD screen? Or am I likely to be throwing good money after bad?

It doesn't seem to be too hard a job to replace the screen. Take a bunch of screws out on front, at side, take off frame, unclip, clip in replacement, and finish (having taken the battery out first). But I am not keen on pulling around the internal gubbins of the thing if I'm looking at a scrap job in any case.

Is it worth my brandishing a screwdriver at it?

Or should I just extract the value of the thing from DD in blood

She's already ruined an ipod touch by spilling milkshake over it and hiding it for months. Then cracking the screen by hiding it on the floor, thinking she'd get away with blaming me for standing on it - forgetting the blue corrosion.

Trouble is that the school insists on computers for homework and I just do not trust her even one centimetre with my mac. For obvious reasons.

Hmmmm. What to do. Strangling children is frowned upon for some reason.

Thanks, anyway. Any more advice would be appreciated.

As there are only 4 LCD screen makers out there, all you need is the size of the screen. Look on Ebay for a screen the same size and bingo !, I replaced a screen in an Acer Travelmate with the same-sized one from a Dell. No problems.

  • Hi,

methinks you have a little devil on your hands, so what happens after Christmas when the new netbook explodes? :rotfl:

Anyhow, you can get a screen kinda cheap on ebay, look, and a wee video on how to do the job look.

Oh, and even though you are not allowed to strangle your kids nowadays, I think you are still allowed to boil them in oil, though will taste better if dipped in a beer flavoured batter first. :rotfl:

If the screen has broken, they aren't that hard to replace. Last year I had to replace the screen on my Toshiba Satellite Pro L10 after I sat on it. The screen cost about 40 or 50 quid from ebay I think.
  • just plug any old monitor in and it should work, doesn't have to be a new one

Whilst on eBay you should also be able to get a nice pink Christmas ribbon wide enough to tie around the Toshiba ready to give it back to DD come the big day. :D
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(
