where is ur water meter?

Options
The guy from the water company came and poked about in my kitchen for a bit but did nothing. Then he went outside and made a mark on those Severn Trent metal flaps/boxes that are out on the street. He said that someone would be coming in three weeks time and installing my water meter down there. I asked him how I was supposed to give a reading and he said I didn't, Severn Trent will come and take water readings themself. Is there anything stopping me opening the flap up and checking myself? Am not sure if it will be visible. He said that someone would come and they wouldn't ring me beforehand and as I haven't yet moved into the property I won't even know when they've been and gone. Has anyone else got their water meter out on the street?!

Yep, mine is on the street. Quite easy to open up yourself and take a reading, which I did when I first moved in.

I just used a screwdriver to push it up!

I pay a fixed amount every month via DD and I think they just check every 6 months and tell me whether this is correct and change accordingly.

Thank you! Am a FTB and am cautious about everything - and as the 'box' is out on the street and not on my property I thought I might get into trouble for touching it!

Lots are, or have a remote sensor on the side of the house so that they can take a reading without having to enter the property.
Nothing stopping you reading it yourself as often as you like. If you can open the flap over the meter outside, you can read it there too.

Your stoptap will also be next to the meter in the chamber too :)

    People should be bolder.

If it is a meter which you pay for, you can, should and must read it when you need to. All to often, we have people on here, usually in flats, whose meters are locked away and they are not allowed personal access to their meters. This is absolutely unacceptable.
