    In case anyone is interested, I got a letter back from the traffic wardens department today which said:

    I refer to your recent letter on the above fixed penalty notice and have to inform you that in view of the circumstances I have authorised cancellation of the penalty on this occasion

    Result!

    Thanks for the advice for what to write in the letter

    Technically, the ticket is invalid. I suspect that's why they backed down.
