Not even that. Unless it is a jumper for a newborn it will have to go as a package which is likely to cost at least £1.39 (up to 500g). Add onto that paypal charges of approx 27p, a few pence for FVFs and the 15 to list and they are up a gum tree.

People do see the big listers doing the 1p or 99p starts and copy them and get carried away thinking that they can't possibly only end up with one bid. It is always a horrible shock when they do sell so low.

I sold a girls skirt on 10p listing day. it sold for 99p & i charged £1 P&P. It only cost 44p to spend and 10p for the mailing bag. So about 85p + £1.56 (£1.41 profit!)

I run a business on eBay. I have bought some stock and I see other people selling the same stock for a hugely reduced price even though it has just come onto the market. When I sat ad worked out cost less VAT and listing/selling fees it works out that they are making about £1.40 on the items. Fine if you are selling 100 of these a day but when you are selling maybe 4 or 5 a day then we end up doing it for nothing. When this first happened Iput my prices right down and almost earnt nothing from selling them and then I gave myself a slap and put the prices up to what they should be so I can make some sort of living. They are paid for so if I sell them great, if not then they will be in stock until they sell. I decided that I am not going to slave over a PC for hours and hours ignoring the kids jus take mke £30 a day - that is not what I set out to do, I wanted to run a business and be a mum. I am getting tired of eBay to be honest and will not be stocking any of the new seasons 'Fashion Lines' because other people sell them for absolute peanuts and you end up having to give them away and are lucky to meet costs. At the moment I have a bra that I bought 4 months ago, Figleaves still have it for £29, my price is £24, people are selling it on eBay for £11.99. I give up, what is the point now? I can't even buy it for that price let alone after paying VAT and Fees on the sale so you have to wonder how and why but both me and my friend have said the same tonight - stick to the old favourites and leave the Fashion Lines as you end up losing so much money on them. If I do not sell for £11.99 I won't sell at all but I refuse to give them away - that all seems rather pointless in my opinion!!

You forgot the 10p listing fee, the admittedly small FVF and I am assuming no paypal charge?

£1.99-10p-10p-44p-3p (FVF) = £1.32. Imagine now having to have paid £1.39 as a package instead of 44p as a large letter and you can see why some sellers don't appreciate why some things can sell at 99p and make a profit, and some can't.

I had to use my local PO today, reluctantly, so paid the £1.39 for packages on 4 items I had to send, whereas the main PO would have sent them at 44p as they do go through the slot. Broke my heart

But how long did this take you to do - the listing, communicating with the seller, packing, posting etc. What with minimum wage now being £5.35 per hour (for over 22yr olds) thats like 15mins work which you probably spent several more times than.

Yeah but everyone thought like that, it would not be economically feasible to sell stuff on ebay or amazon for most people.

    Oops yeah i did! Cheers!

I find the local PO cheaper because the person that works there doesn't know how to work the till :rotfl: I send about £6 worth of postage for about £4. Now thats what i call money saving!lol

To be honest, i don't mind packaging stuff up. And the staff at the PO are very friendly (Usually!!) and the listing only took a few minutes, so its fine for me!

  • Maybe, like me, they just sell odd bits every now and again as a hobby. I rarely make much money as most of my listings sell for between 99p and £5. I get rid of some clutter and it gives me something to do.
