Cancel o2 iphone contract? Moving to NYC!

My £35 per month iPhone contract runs until June 2012, I'm moving to NYC in about 2 months. What the heck should I do?!

Ideally I'd like to cancel my UK o2 account, sell the phone, move to NYC and take out a new contract with AT&T/Sprint/Verizon/T-mobile (whomever) and get the new iPhone 5 which should be out by then.

BUT

I've read that o2 are a PITA regarding cancellations. Would I be better to drop my tariff to the lowest one on the UK sim and keep it going until June 2012 and then ending it? And what is the lowest I can drop it to? £30? £15?

Thank you very much in advance for any advice / knowledge / useful links!!

So are all other networks. Why would they give away expensive handsets for nothing?

Yes. You can pay it in a lump sum. They call it an early termination fee.

The next lower tariff, i.e. £30ish, once in the second half of the minimum term.

On the subject of a US contract, you'll have to go prepaid as you wont have a credit history or permanent address history.

(Incidentally, paying off your phone contract is a tiny expense compared to the others involved in moving to the US)
