I always prefer it if someone collects - cash on collection is sooooo much better than losing a chunk to paypal!0

Just at the bottom of my post there is a link saying remove your thanks, click that and you can "un thank" me.
If it makes you feel better I thanked you so you've got a thanks as compensation:D0 -
They should buy the item through eBay then come to pick up as eBay still found you the buyer and we are all paying for the sales we make via post. It's only fair that if eBay found you the buyer then eBay should get some commission; you'd be paying a lot more to advertise/promote your business without it.
What would you say if you'd advertised something on a BIN and somebody wanted to come and look at it in advance; which could be common for some items - cars, bikes, caravans etc.
they turned up, looked at the item and decided they wanted it. Would you expect them to buy it on eBay or just take the money and sell as a private sale seeing as they're there with a fist full of cash.0 -
Had at least 5 people collect in the last couple of years. All on items offered with postage, no problems, all to be honest nice people and all cash on collection.
Collected one item myself (some tshirts) with no issues but had collection refused on a couple of items (funnily enough ones that postage was very high on...)0 -
It is interesting though that there are obviously a lot of sellers that still charge postage or packing or a collection fee when someone collects. At least half, probably more of my people collecting double double check that they will only be paying the item cost. When they come and hand over their money more than a handful of them have mentioned how nice it is that a seller doesn't try to add 'extras' at the door. I can only assume that it means that previously they have been asked to pay more than item cost.
mind you,perhaps theres a benefit of 'free' postage0 -
I do think if they turn up and buy something else off you for cash without you listing it etc. it's fine, but them contacting you through eBay seeing your ad and a collection option and then just turning up is IMO fee avoidance on your part.

You seem to get overlly pedantic about this. In the real world its not deliberate fee avoidance as the seller hasn't gone out to conciously do this.
We all have our limits and what rules we will bend break. I'm sure you're not whiter than white as you seem to imply. Most of us are in business to make money as JP said why would you so over complicate it so that you end up driving customers away.
I have sellers I deal with off ebay. I met them via ebay and have purchased from them via listings. Now though shock horror I contact them directly. Occasionally they will say they have an item listed that is to.my specifications. So i will look at their listing but buy directly (and the world hasnt ended). I probably spend a few hundred pounds a year with them. If though they made it so complicated and had to do a listing for every custom item I bought I'd probably go elsewhere.
Ebay in its business model will have built a cushion in and will expect a proportion of sales to complete off ebay. Yes it would rather they didn't but they are realists and know this happens.
If you dont wish to do it thats fine and your choice but moralising and patronising anyone who has ever been offered an off ebay sale by a buyer is just silly.
Yes sellers shouldnt go asking buyers to trade off ebay but if the buyer offers and the seller is happy that's their choice. It may not be what you would do but thats your choice.'The More I know about people the Better I like my Dog'

Yes, there are certain points at which I'd take the bait if offered - but I don't think people should actively solicit things like this, nor portray it on public forums as the right way to do things.
There are people reading this who would take it as a green light to go further. We all laugh at people who write on their listings "Please don't bid please call XXXX XXXXXX" - but this the extreme version of what people are suggesting here. I could go into work and help myself to pens and paper and think "the company budgets for this so it's OK to take it" and then I could be walking out with bigger and bigger stuff...until it becomes actionable theft and I'm sacked or nicked.
I'm sorry if you think I'm being patronising or insulting, or think I'm whiter-than-white (I'm not but I'm not going to publicly say I've broken the rules on here, I'd be crucified and rightly so IMO) but since you feel the need to say this, why can't I also make my feelings clear? I just don't like people who break the rules of the site they have signed up to, or encouraging others to do so. What you say is in the public domain, so it needs to set an example if you want people like me - mostly buyers - to play by the rules too. Which I always do.
It's your business if you do but leave me out of this - I pay my fees, same as everyone else, and if someone doesn't pay for what they use, and freeloads on me, then so be it, but don't pretend it's a good thing to do because the only person who loses out is eBay - because we all lose out to some degree. It may not happen here, but someone who breaks the rules intentionally here might do so elsewhere...and the slippery slope is hard to resist."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

I don't agree with you at all that it's pedantic or patronising to advise on correct eBay procedure. People come on here to get help and to share opinions.
Your example of meeting sellers on eBay then selling to them off eBay is not the same thing. You're entitled to buy from anyone you like. The issue for sellers is listing items on eBay then ending early to sell off eBay. That's fee circumvention.
eBay rules about fee circumvention are perfectly clear and not decided by mindreading!
In the 'real world' calling people's opinions 'silly, patronising, moralising and pedantic' is kinda rude and unhelpful in my opinion.
And since you've explained to us that 'that's your choice' etc, wasn't that a wee bit pedantic? :rotfl:0 -
I am pretty shocked that my post, which was simply me being honest about a couple of sales, is now being taken as a "green light" to encourage others to blatently avoid ebay fees on a large scale. As I said before I would never and have never encourage a buyer to buy off ebay - despite buyers emailing me directly to do so.
I'm going to take a break from this forum for a bit because that has upset me and I'd rather not derail things by getting into an argument. I am a genuine seller who cares about my customers and I wish I'd never said anything as it now appears I'm a corrupt, fee stealing fraudster.
