I offer collection on my items. I thought that I wouldn't get many, with living in a very rural spot, but actually do get a few, especially in the summer. I have also cultivated a few repeat customers who happen to live where I drive once a week anyway, so I drop stuff off to them and they're obviously very happy with the arrangement.

While the rest of us pay our final value fees like mugs?

Hardly like mugs. If someone called you and wanted to pick up an item in an hour, didn't want to buy through ebay and wanted to pay cash - and you would turn them down, you are a better ebay seller than me.:)

I do think if they turn up and buy something else off you for cash without you listing it etc. it's fine, but them contacting you through eBay seeing your ad and a collection option and then just turning up is IMO fee avoidance on your part.

They should buy the item through eBay then come to pick up as eBay still found you the buyer and we are all paying for the sales we make via post. It's only fair that if eBay found you the buyer then eBay should get some commission; you'd be paying a lot more to advertise/promote your business without it.

Yes, but we live in the real world. Buyer "Hello I'd like to buy the item you've got for £100 but can't be arsed/dont want to use ebay, havent got an account etc, can I come and pay cash and pick it up now. Seller "i'm sorry but as I pay ebay to find me a buyer you'll have to conclude the sale through them to pay them their commission"

Buyer, "I'll find someone who want's my custom and cash then"

Exactly. I would never tell a buyer to buy off ebay, or even suggest it. I'm not going to lose a couple of sales though because a buyer doesn't want to go through ebay. Fair enough if people think that's wrong, but it is the real world as jps says.

Is there no risk that Ebay might frown on this as your listing asking for cash on collection contravenes their policy that Paypal must always be offered?
If you choose your wording carefully, you offer cash on collection (avoiding postal charges) in addition to paypal payments (requiring paid postage).

I've just been listening to Money Box on Radio 4, where a listener described how an eBay buyer paid via paypal, collected a kingsize mattress and afterwards claimed the purchase and collection was fraudulent activity.

As we've come to expect, a spokesman from Paypal washed their hands of the situation, suggesting that the kingsize mattress should have been posted with tracking! :rotfl:

The bottom line is that if a buyer collects, accept only cash or accept you're running a risk that the buyer could could easily pull the same stunt.

Re the cash on collection question. All my items I am referring to above are listed with full postage- they are not being sold as collection only. So I am quite happy to accept paypal and post the item, however I offer the option of cash on collection if they prefer to collect, colelction is merely a service they might prefer and I always ask them to confirm colelction details with me beforehand. If they go through checkout and use paypal they cannot remove my postage option- so I will post the item.

For my strictly collection only items I am careful not to say cash ONLY on collection but only list items I can afford to write off if i get scammed.

As for selling other things, I always try that. If they come to say collect a piece of Wedgwood they have won I will always make sure I have other Wedgwood items on my dresser in the hall and make sure they come in and see those items. I then ask them to remind me which bit they have come to collect- and they often ask about other pieces and if i haven't listed them on ebay I iwll always consider a deal there and then. I am careful though not to overstep the boundary, I'll only deal on items that I have not already listed on ebay.

Sounds a great idea Soolin. The one customer I've sold something else to, I didn't list on ebay either - just mentioned that I would have it in stock soon an did he want me to contact him when I did.
