Protecting savings from means tested benefits

Keith - If you are not on income support or claiming housing benefit which i doubt very much as you are paying a mortgage the rules concerning capital with regards to tax credits are very clear - only the money earnt from savings e.g. interest above £300 is taking into account - it doesnt matter if you are living in a house worth £500,000 you will still get tax credits.
What I would be concerned about is whether this coalition government intends to move the goalposts when it brings in Universal Credit in 2013 and beyond. Any opportunity to claw back money from the average family trying to work hard and keep savings will be in their sights.
Tory was wrong to judge you in the manner that he did. Another one that wants hark on about fraud fraud fraud without even looking at the facts properly.0 -
If the only benefits you're getting are tax credits, I really don't see that you have a problem.0

Thanks all. I guess easiest option is sell up first and put that money straight into new house.
Thanks again0 -
Couldn't your money stay in the trust account? It might limit how it is spent but maybe it could be used for your children when they turn 18.0

Can I remind you about the rules for this forum as set dwon by MSE Dan?
you beat me to it,some newer members on here are far to happy to discuss rather than help and its help we give here not a debate on the rights and wrongs
i worry that if others see people being judged it will put them off posting and that shouldnt happen
so in no official capacity whatsoever could i request posters keep their opinions to themselves and their help to the fore0 -
Woodbine
I totally agree with you.
I've been shocked at the number of posters on this board who jump in and either blatently accuse or insinuate that someone asking for advice or asking a specific question is planning to commit benefit fraud or 'protect their inheritance'.0 -
There is really no need to type in 'bold'.
Regardless of what the thread of the title is, what is so wrong with giving reasonable, unjudgemental advice in a polite manner such as the reply below:davefrombristol wrote: »Keith - If you are not on income support or claiming housing benefit which i doubt very much as you are paying a mortgage the rules concerning capital with regards to tax credits are very clear - only the money earnt from savings e.g. interest above £300 is taking into account - it doesnt matter if you are living in a house worth £500,000 you will still get tax credits.

I can fully understand why someone who is definitely and beyond any doubt committing benefit fraud 'gets people's backs up' but it seems that some posters just want to ear-bash someone for asking for advice without knowing their full situation.0 -
I'm having trouble reading the print, so I think if I want to type in bold to make it easier for myself, then I'm perfectly entitled to do that, or is it in the "rules" that it's not allowed...0

And what is wrong with "judging" when people are trying to manipulate the benefit system? There is really no need to type in 'bold'.
