How can I find out if my dongle is locked or not? Would I just put another SIM card in and see if it works?

Yes, or just google the type of dongle and see what others say. That'll also help you unlock it should you need it.

Even if the Vodafone modem is not Network locked(they aren't always) they are locked down by the software.
In those cases, you can just use a different connection manager or install a new DashBoard.

There was only one model released with that SIM. So I guess the procedure would be to unlock it, plug it in, close down the Vodafone Connection Manager, open the Generic Huawei Mobile Partner and enter the connection details for the new SIM.

That way you won't have any problems if and when you wish to revert back to using the Vodafone SIM.

If you are not up to the challenge, leave it as it is and just buy a new modem as they are cheap enough.
The SIMs that don't expire are being sold for over £40 on eBay.

You can buy a new USB modem for under £20.
