Road tax with no V5

Hi savemoney,
Thanks for sharing. It seems these petty rules and regulations are designed to cause maximum inconvenience those who want to abide by the law. As you say why do we bother?
Fortunately I am not getting grief from my insurers. I guess it might become a problem if I have an accident!"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

To tax without a V5C or new keeper supplement see : http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069680Taxing without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
If you’re shown as the registered keeper of the vehicle on DVLA records, you can tax in person or by post at your nearest DVLA local office.
You’ll need to complete a V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) which must be accompanied by £25 (fee for a duplicate Registration Certificate). Include this with a completed V10 ‘Vehicle licence application’, MOT, insurance and payment for vehicle tax.
If your address has changed, you’ll need to provide your driving licence, original bank or building society statement or recent utility bill. If your name has changed, you need to provide your marriage certificate, decree nisi, decree absolute or deed poll.
If you’re not shown as the registered keeper on DVLA records you cannot tax the vehicle. You’ll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name. To get one, fill in form V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate’ and post to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DD. You may have to wait up to four weeks for a new certificate to arrive. In the meantime, you should keep your vehicle off the road.

Unfortunately your problem was caused by your dealer not complying with the rules and giving you the green V5C/2 New Keeper Supplement - that acts as your registration document until your V5C arrives from DVLA, and you can use it to tax the car at the post office.0 -

I knew the car dealer let me down. Salesman blamed the admin staff.
A reputable dealer would have known the problems you would face when attempting to tax the car, since it ran out so near after the sale and they did not have the new keeper supplement. In this type of case, the dealer should have arranged to tax it for you (you probably would have needed to pay for the tax) and you may have lost up to 1 month of tax, but that would have been better than being stuck with a car that you will need to keep on private property until you can tax it.
Note, it is not unusual for the new keeper supplement not being available with the V5C at a dealer, this happens when a car is sold privately, then soon after sold on to a dealer (or via auction etc.) When you eventually receive the V5C, you may see the number of previous keepers is higher than expectedThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. Please be advised, the vehicle had three months tax when I bought it in July. More than enough time for dealer to send V5 and arrance change of ownership with DVLA, as they said they would. My problem only came to light when I realised time was running short.

After many calls to Stoke Audi and getting nowhere, I phoned DVLA. It seems my dealer gave them incorrect address. The lady a' DVLA could not have been more helpful. She made a note of my correct address and promised to send new V5 urgently.
I am waiting for it and a little stressed out as tax runs out at the end of the month."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Hi,
Was reading through thread and thought i should join so i may help you on this missile. You can apply for your road tax online as long as you have valid mot n insurance and as you have contacted dvla too, they should have changed your address on the system so you should have no problems getting the road tax from tomorrow morning online everything is checked automatically so you should have no problems however If you want to do it via post office then you will need to wait. You should be able to get road tax online to start as soon as your current one finishes and you usually get it within a week
Hope this helps0 -
I believe one needs the number off the V5 document to apply for tax on line?
Hopefully document will arrive before the end of the month. If not I may phone and ask if they can tell me V5 number over the phone."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
