Hi,

I bought a second hand car from a dealer and have not received V5. Dealer says they have contacted DVLA and I "should" get it within 10 days.

Tax expires end of next month. Is there any way I can tax car without V5. Do we still have 14 days grace to renew tax?

DVLA state that it could take over 4 weeks to get V5. I am currently awaiting V5 and its been over 2 weeks now. I need it for insurance company and or changing car for disabled class

I think you can do it at local dvla office but thats not an option for me
  • Didn't you get given the New Owner Supplement slip? I recently bought a car a few weeks before the tax expired, I was able to tax it using the slip at the Post Office.

No I did not receive that.

As far as I am aware you only get that when purchasing a car from a.n.other private individual?

THere has never been any such thing. There is no 14 day grace period, there never has been a 14 day grace period other than down the Dog & Duck.

There is only 5 working days grace for displaying a licence ordered on-line, by post or phone - but only if you apply before the current licence expires, or if the vehicle is SORN.

And from what i heard the other week going to the local DVLA wont be any use either.

Fairly long queue and getting close to closing time, A guy came down the queue asking why your were there
some were trying to tax a car not registered to them. They were turned away or told they needed to transfer
ownership to themselves to be able to tax it.
If you didn't have a logbook then they were told they had to apply for one then when it arrives they could tax the car.

    Thanks for your comments.

It seems I shall have to wait and hope it comes by the 30th. If not, I cannot drive the car. I cannot SORN it either, so I risk a fine.

I feel for you missile. I am currently get grief from insurance company because I dared get insurance for new to me car and I hadnt got V5c to send to them I already had to send a copy of driving licence and NCD. Then today I get grief from old insurance company hadnt sent the old insurance back which I did

I got told by email that if I dont have v5c by end of month they will cancel insurance I managed to get them to back down when I supplied part of v5c and also receipt for purchase of new car

You wonder why bother complying with the law when you get so much stick?

I wouldnt mind I paid 6 months road tax even though I can get free road tax as it will be classed as disabled just so I could drive new car home legally I cover temp insurance cover from dealer

On top of that I have had 2 accidents in 2 years and not once had I driven the bloody car idiots hit car whilst parked one hit n run other neighbour I dont know why I bother driving
