Can I complain/ get compensation back for him?
You could try approaching his parents and asking for an ex-gratia payment. Or perhaps ask them if they have a newer, younger and smarter model that you could exchange him for.

But I'm not aware of any legal requiremnts for them to oblige.

Assuming you've not made a successful claim on his life assurance policy today, I'd suggest tackling this problem together.

    1) Go to www.makesenseofcards.co.uk
    2) Complete a statement of affairs as fully as possible.
    3) Post if on the Debt-free Wannabe part of this forum.
    4) Engage the fluffy people there who are very good at supporting you and helping you to reduce outgoings and increase debt repayments.

    Good luck.
  • Darkangel, It looks worse than you think. If your credit history is fine, it may be simpler to extract yourself from this than you think at the moment.
If Hubby was using teh card for day 2 day purchases, chances are the cash went on silly things (Starbucks Coffee, sandwich bar lunches etc)
When things got tight in our house, everything we could went onto a Zero % card, anything other than weekly food shops and petrol spends was stopped, and although not tottaly clear, we got control and can see light within the next 12 months.
You are doing the right thing dealing with it now, just keep with it and dont give up.

And yes, there are a lot of people here who are more than willing to help, support and advise.

I've just recently found out my husband of 8 years, has 2 credit cards with £25000 debt between them!

most of this debt was accrued before we were married and I never knew about it. (Thats another story!)

But in the last year he had a debt of £13000 on one card and the lender offered him a raise to £15000 despite him only paying minimum payments every month and spending on neccessary things like petrol and food... and he has now maxed the card out thanks to their 'kind' offer to raise the limit.

Not only am a furious with my husband, but with the lenders for not being responsible... surely they can see from the type of purchaces that he makes nad the fact that he only makes min payments that a raise is only making things worse for someone who is obviously sinking in debt?

What can I do? Can I complain/ get compensation back for him?

If he was using the cards for petrol and food , money meant for that is either being spent elsewhere or you have buried your head(s) in the sand as to what your outgoings v incomings are .
The first thing you need to do is to draw up a realistic budget and check it against what you actually spend

    Hi OP,

Take a look at the Office Of Fair Trading website - Irresponsible Lending Guidence document, especially item 4.6. They do not regard being able to make the minimum payment as the same as being about to pay off the debt in a reasonable period of time (ie. about the same as it would take to pay off a loan for the same amount).

I don't think that you've got any chance of compensation and don't really see why you would be entitled to it, but this may or may not help depending on your circumstances.

If you don't get into uni uni to low grads it's uni's fault
If you have a car accident it's councils faulty for not putting up signs
  • The Credit Card Board contributors are highly knowledgeable & diligent in relation to any credit card problems but offer little in the way of specifically debt-related sympathy. Its can be quite a judgemental place for newbie threads but any specific or unique questions about CCs will likely get expert, worthy answers.

I find that the DFW board is much better with help and focus on debt management and solutions and the CC board is more focused on being able to make you rich with CC cashback in the future. Genuinely hope that you get your problems sorted and welcome to MSE. :)

The OP does not appear to want debt management advice, she does seem to be mainly interested in compensation.

    Thats a little harsh!!

So pleased that some of you have been helpfull with advice and such, but some of you are down right rude and your tone is not helpful at all....

You should be ashamed of yourselves for having such a bad attitude to some one in need....

I asked a simple question!!! I did not expect to be called pathetic, or treated like someone who thinks they are 'entitled' to compensation...

Thanks to those who have said the Debt Free Wannabe forums are nicer... this CC forum should have a warning sign on it...

Maybe in my OP I didnt express myself fully....
I TOTALLY get that my irressponsible, rediculous, lying idiot of a husband is at fault and responsible for his debt,.... But I am also furious with the Credit card companys for encouraging people, and not assessing the case before offering more money. Naive I know, but I would have thought that they have a responsibility as a lender....Obviously I know better now!

I work bloody hard to earn money and save, Ive just had the biggest blow in my life and now im going to have to work twice as hard to get out of this pit.... Advice is extremaly helpfull actually, so please dont discourage people who actually want to help me, by saying all I want is compo!

    £13k was being paid back.

So they assessed that he could probably stretch to £15k.

By all accounts, he has done.

Well , yes and no to this , if he was getting into debt to pay for food and petrol , yet you are managing to save money then there is something awry somewhere , maybe instead of calling him names you should be talking to him
