Having read the article, I would like to know who's rules are quoted in the article over how much change you can use.
Is it a Banks, the Bank of England, the local supermarket, the person who wrote the article etc ~~ it is not clear and may be misleading.
This is not new: I was told this about 5+ years ago when I worked on the tills in a well known fashion store, we were told we didn't have to count more then that amount (mainly as it held up the queue which we were forever being moaned at from Head Office "...more then 2 people waiting is called a queue...!!" (...yeah but this is London, this is the real world and this is what happens if you hype up your product and sell to the masses:cool:)
Its not something all cashiers stick to, its just what we were told was an option: we could refuse to take that amount of money which we rarely did, only if we felt a customer was trying to belittle us or something.0 -

some of tesco self serves you just throw your change in and it counts it.0 -
The law on legal tender is only relevant in a few situations - Martin has a good article on this - but it isn't relevant in a supermarket (whether self scan or not). You can use as much or as little change in a supermarket as you wish.
However, shops can refuse to sell anything to anyone for any reason, as long as it isn't discrimination. So they can refuse to sell you something if you pay in small coins. This is because they "don't want to" rather than because "it's not legal tender".Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

Thats ok unless you take into my bank who now moan and say you are only allowed to give them between 2 & 3 bag's maximum.
I had a jar full of pennies once and counted them all out which took me an eternity to do and had a a parking ticket from the council so out of my annoyance decided to take the money to them.
The lady at the Councils office was not amused but did take it and spent an age counting out the money, as the saying goes revenge is a dish best served cold. :rotfl::rotfl:
my bank has a paying in machine you tip all your coins in and it count's it for you and pay's it stright into your bank account.0 -

I've never seen one in a bank. I guess you only go into banks occasionally and then only your own bank.:j Trytryagain FLYLADY - SAYE £700 each month Premium Bonds £713 Mortgage Was £100,000@20/6/08 now zilch 21/4/15:beer: WTL - 52 (I'll do it 4 MUM)0
