self service checkout-loose change

Usually save my loose change & put it in the cash counting machine thingy at the supermarket, the one thar takes a percentage.
Just read that one chap just puts it in the self service checkout to pay for stuff. Would this really work with a load of 1p & 2p??:D

My neighbour apparently does this all the time. She hates loose change( why its all money;)) so she just puts it into a seperate purse and uses that before putting any 'good' change or notes in.Would hate to be behind her at self service

  • I give all mine to my son, he saves for years (because I rarely use cash) and then we bag it all up and take it to the bank... last time he managed to buy two Beast Quest books with the money... he was very pleased :)

But I don't see why you can't use all your change to pay for your stuff at the supermarket! But I would be embarresed, would rather spend an hour bagging it and taking it to the bank!
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

  • in morrisons, you dont have to feed the coins in individually, you just chuck it in the hole for change, and it counts it very quickly, only usually put a handful of coins in at the time, not a whole jar full
loves to knit and crochet for others
  • I never have stacks of loose change because I do use the selfservice, but I am also quite happy to spend a few extra seconds counting out whatever change I have to the till operators. When I worked in a shop we welcomed loose change, obviously not bags of it-at least not when busy, but the odd twenty pence worth of coppers. I hate breaking into notes!
I think though that there is limited amount of coppers that shops HAVE to accept in one transaction?

Thats ok unless you take into my bank who now moan and say you are only allowed to give them between 2 & 3 bag's maximum.

I had a jar full of pennies once and counted them all out which took me an eternity to do and had a a parking ticket from the council so out of my annoyance decided to take the money to them.

The lady at the Councils office was not amused but did take it and spent an age counting out the money, as the saying goes revenge is a dish best served cold. :rotfl::rotfl:

I don't take loads but if I am using the self serve I put all my smash in first I only use it when it isnt busy though.
  • Just had a quick google and found this

    • You can only pay for 20p worth of goods with pennies or tuppences
    • You can only pay for £5 worth of goods with 5ps or 10ps
    • You can only pay for £10 worth of goods with 20ps or 50ps
    • £1 and £2 coins can be used for any level of transaction.

I don't take any notice of this if I want to use the self service till. Only this week rather than use a note spent 35p on some rolls I wanted using only pennies and tuppences. The machine doesn't stop you.;)

I'm not quite sure why it was the cashiers fault that you parked illegally and thus got yourself a fine!!

We keep ours in a demijohn -last time we cashed up we had enough for a new fridge - it took a looooong time to count!
