The cameras on this section of the M1 are only active when the variable speed control signs are activated.

jwruk is correct. HADECS is about managing congestion, not about enforcement. It's a political minefield to enforce the 70 limit 24/7 since it's generally acknowledged that lots of people speed on the motorway with little ill effect.

However this doesn't stop a police patrol from doing you, or them sending out the talivans from time to time when they need a bit more cash from those lucrative speed awareness courses.

There is a notmal GATSO camera on the M4 at the 60mph part near Heathrow

Indeed, and there's one on the 50mph bit of the M62 as you come into Liverpool.

This is about HADECS in the 70 zones though.

AFAIA the cameras are only active when the display is indicating a lower speed limit & the trigger point is substantially higher than on urban roads.... don't go testing this though ;)

Thank you, that's the exact question I was asking. (Can you please substantiate that without compromising your position?)

Boy do I wish there would be some consistancy in the way we deal with speeding.

The normal view I would have is that if these things are installed and paid for, then they should be detecting speeders ALL the time, I've no issue with that.

So why have a system that snaps folks that exceed the temporary limit, (when indicated), yet ignores the breaking of the NSL???

Maybe someone actually has some sense after all.;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I don't think those cameras are switched on at all, every time I've driven through that section of the M1 (sticking to 70) there's been streams of cars blasting past doing about 80 or 90 and seemingly no reaction from the cameras

The view seems to be that maybe only I in 10 actually has the camera installed. Guess the guys that fly by are in the know.

I did read that if you look at the rear of the gantry on the opposite carriageway, you can see if there is a camera fitted as they always arm both sides of the road???? Maybe yet another old wives tail?

There's also one (that seems to alternate from N to S bound) on the M4 Heathrow spur and I'm pretty sure it's grey (rules changed in 2007 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/2749315/Speed-camera-rules-change-as-quick-as-a-flash.html ).

Unless you were exceeding the signed limit by a significant amount I wouldn't worry..... I've also just thought of something else which may or may not be of any use, it'll have to wait 'till the morning though.
