When the Mi was widened to 4 lanes up in Derbys/Notts an overhead gantry system was installed, just like the ones near Heathrow etc. Variable speed limits for traffic congestion control, erm

Does anyone know if the odd one that is actually fitted with a camera, (I understand most aren't), works at the NSL of 70 when the sign isn't indicating anything??

I had to make a spirited dash in the early hours of this morning to deliver a passport to the airport and may have accidentally driven a little faster than normal :o:o:o
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I was under the impression that the only speed cameras that can be fixed on the motorway were average speed cameras, which are pretty obvious, so aside from a police van or man with a gun, thats the only way of getting caught.

I used to drive the M42 a lot which has the same system, and often when the signs were left on 50 after the rush hour i would fly through at normal speeds and never got in trouble...

    :rotfl:

You've never seen the normal GATSO cameras at road works?

Average cameras are used more now as they are a far better way of controlling speed during roadworks.

The M42 has gatso's fitted not average speed cameras.
  • I don't think those cameras are switched on at all, every time I've driven through that section of the M1 (sticking to 70) there's been streams of cars blasting past doing about 80 or 90 and seemingly no reaction from the cameras

The cameras on the M42 (and M25) that are used with a variable speed limit are called HADECS, they do work on the same principle as GATSO however. Most GATSOS still use wet film. HADECS are fully digital and transmit the images automatically.

Whatever, they are not average speed cameras though.
