Telephone Call - Virus on Computer

Hi There
Sincere apologies if this topic has been "done to the death" but I need some advice.
I telephoned my eldery Uncle today, as I wanted to make sure that he had received the information that I sent him on that firm in Belgium who were offering prizes for overpriced chocolates etc etc and also (as an aside) to remind him that there was another scam regarding a computer virus - that's before I get into all the the stuff about people wanting to resurface drives and tree cutting.
Anyway, TOO LATE - last week apparently he got "the call" - luckily (he says) that his Carer was there and was typing in all the instructions on his computer that they gave over the phone. Thankfully, she did not give any information verbally relating to credit cards etc for them "fixing" the problem.
So - my question is - how can I unfix his computer - do I need to download virus checkers - roll back the system to a date before the dreaded phone call. What do I need to look for etc etc
I hate these !!!!!!!s - it is so heart-breaking to try and make the older generation aware that there are heartless !!!!!!!s out there who really don't give a toss..
Apologies about the language ..
Regards

Install Ubuntu on his computer and your troubles will be over...Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

yeah umm not really the ideal advice to the OP's question is it....
fortunately mostly these crafty scammers don't seem to do anything except get you to type in some commands into the CMD dos like screen, then get you to use their remote access software (log me in) and then they remotely 'fix' your non existent problems....they then extract £120 for the 'fix' and that's probably the end of it.
However it would be very wise to run an antivirus/spyware scan and probably speak to your credit card company explaining you've been conned and hopefully the scammers won't get a penny and your credit card won't get maxed out.
.......so unless Ubunto can now do all of the above, which would be impressive, I'd suggest not just installing Ubunto alone as all your troubles may still exist

I think my in laws got done with this scam.
They popped round today and were telling me how BT called them late Friday evening and said they had a virus on the computer. Funny when I said it was a well know con, they didn't say much more, but I think they might have followed the instructions of the BT agent.
I didn't like to remind them that BT isn't their ISP!These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!
I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!0
