Cashing a cheque at the bank that issued it?

Hi, I've read online that I can cash a cheque at the bank that issued it, any truth in this? I just got a cheque for 1,800 from tesco insurance and they bank with RBS and I bank with RBS, so I was wondering if I could take this cheque to RBS and cash it right there and then? Pretty desperate for the money and can't really wait until it clears in my bank.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

You have to pay the cheque in to your account.

It will be 'crossed' so this is all you can do with it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • That's really not what I wanted to hear but thanks guys for answering!

Some banks will allow you to cash a crossed check as long as you have an account there and take proof of ID (passport, photo driving license) and proof of address (utility bill + bank statement). Be warned though, I believe its a chargable service. Don't know the actual figure, but probably £20 - £25.

Give them a ring before digging out your passport.

NOTE: If the cheque bounces, you'll be left overdrawn and could face significant charges!
  • never heard of that being available anywhere gromitt, extending your overdraft maybe, express clearance maybe but even that will take 2 days

RBS/Natwest used to let you draw on the cheque the same day providing you both banked at the same branch.
