Nuisance "call centre" calls

Phone rings: Overseas accent, says hello can I speak to the homeowner
Me: I'll just get him/her
Me: carries on doing whatever I was doing, occassionally popping back to see if they have hung up yet
Record wait time = 2m10secs.
I think I'll try this tactic next. I had one yesterday (sorta knew it was going to be one of these "survey" calls because it was an international number). I'm registered with TPS but these overseas companies possibly aren't bound by this agreement? He started by asking for my postcode so I just told him where to shove it and hung up.0 -

I now always use a phone number which is not in use eg 01234 000000 -it seems to be accepted as long as it has the right number of digits, and never, ever give out my mobile number, not even to my bank!
No! I never fill in Surveys etc. I object to giving out any info to a complete stranger so I always say no.
Good Idea about the answerphone. I think I will look into getting one.
Been thinking about buying one for some time so this will be as good a reason as any.0 -
I am with BT again on a very cheap tariff and a couple of months ago appealed to them to help me get rid of these calls. I have a lie down around 1pm (poor health) and for some reason that is when we get most of these calls. BT said they would deal with them but it would take 2-3 weeks. We are still getting the odd call - maybe a couple each week - but the rest have gone.
Uncle Zen's response was good. If we get any more I'll try that method!0 -

Have used this method twice today.
Didn't solve anything but made me feel a whole lot better.
It particularly annoys me when you say "hello" and they have you on hold untill they are ready.
Of course you have to wait for them to speak to know who it is so, this makes me feel like I am giving them a taste of their own medicine.:rotfl:0 -
If it is one of them calls, simply place the phone on the side without hanging up and carry on with whatever your doing. Not only does it cost them money, it also ties that line up for a few mins as they cant make another outgoing call
That's what I did with one I had just now, I heard him say 'I know you're listening' then he hung up.
It was from Consumer Lifestyles, have had several calls from them. I'm sure one time my husband asked to have our details removed when they called. We're registered with the TPS but don't think that does any good if they already have your number.0 -
I have caller ID so if it displays international or number withheld I just don't answer, as has been said if it is someone you know such as your doctor they will leave a message. 1571 is handy for this.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

i either get the recorded message phone calls or international call centre ones for someone who had my number before me.
i just dont bother answering the phone when it rings. If i want to speak to the caller, they already have my mobile number so they can ring that instead
Virgin wanted to charge me £2 a month to have with-held number reject. I dont think so!
might try UncleZens response next time :-)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards.
