Nuisance "call centre" calls

Sorry if this is the wrong thread to post but please direct if need to!
I am getting those annoying phone calls (from "overseas" call centres etc) all day, every day and it's driving me mad.
Have had 6 today already and got the evening ones to endure yet.
I don't actually talk to them once I find out who it is, I just put the phone down
Does anyone know that number to phone that puts a stop to "most" of these calls? I did this some years ago and hardly ever got one of these "pester calls".

Thanks! MrsB2100 - have just found the website and registered but said I was already registered. Obviously, that was from years ago and you don't have to renew.
On the website, It said that it couldn't stop calls from abroad so this is obviously what I am getting.
Think it's time the government acted on this, it is such a nuisance.
You can't even barr calls you don't recognise either, as it could be an emergancy call or something.0 -
If it is one of them calls, simply place the phone on the side without hanging up and carry on with whatever your doing. Not only does it cost them money, it also ties that line up for a few mins as they cant make another outgoing call0

This will be my tactic from now on. We went through a spate of these calls over the summer but they suddenly stopped. I was just thinking to myself yesterday that we were obviously free of the nuisance when "they" went and called us again last night!I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.

Jai_M, Think I might just do that!
Didn't really get any untill about 6 months ago and now they don't stop. Made me wonder why they should start so suddenly.0 -

You probably filled in a competition or a survey online - and in the very small print agreed to allow you details to be shared with third parties!
I now always use a phone number which is not in use eg 01234 000000 -it seems to be accepted as long as it has the right number of digits, and never, ever give out my mobile number, not even to my bank!0 -
I have set up a sipgate number specifically for sites that demand my number for dubious reasons. The voicemail announces "this seems to be a marketing call, and I don't much like them..."0

Phone rings: Overseas accent, says hello can I speak to the homeowner
Me: I'll just get him/her
Me: carries on doing whatever I was doing, occassionally popping back to see if they have hung up yet

Get an answer machine, if you don't recognise the number calling let it go to the machine. If it is a genuine call they will leave a message - you can pick up the call at this point - 99% of them just hang up at this point.0

The TPS can not do anything about calls originating from overseas.
Best thing to do is ask them to remove you from their database as you aren't interested in anything they have to offer.
If that fails then just hang up.0
