Just got married...

Hi there,
I married my partner a few weeks ago and was told by a family member that my tax code will change to what he calls, "A Married man's tax code". I told my employer this and asked for their advice and was told there was no such thing. Could someone advise me on this please?
Also... Now we are married, am I entitled to any other benefits etc? I know it may sound like a money grabbing set of questions, I just want to make sure I apply for what I may be entitled for.
I'll give you my current situation:
I have a daughter who is 20 months old, I currently earn around £18500 annualy and currently receive Child Tax Credits (Joint Claim) of about £45 per week.
For some reason, since I sent my renewal back, they stopped my Working Tax credit element of it and said I was earning too much, not looked into this so any help will be greatly appreciated.
I also get £8 housing benefit per week and £20 Child Benefit
My partner is unempoyed.
Again... Any help would be massively appreciated.

Married couples allowance disappeared about 12 years ago, shortly after I married (typical).
As for the rest of it, I would think that if you were living together before you married nothing would change, but the best place to ask is in the Benefits & Tax Credits forum.

Yes, there is a marriage tax break, as long as one of you was born before April 1935http://www.direct.gov.uk wrote:If you married on or after 5 December 2005 or are in a civil partnership
If you are married or in a civil partnership and living together and at least one spouse or partner was born before 6 April 1935, the person with the higher income can claim Married Couple’s Allowance.
HMRC reduce the claimant's tax bill by ten per cent of the Married Couple’s Allowance to which he or she is entitled. The actual amount depends on the income of the spouse or civil partner with the higher income.

Upon marriage, there are some changes to your tax status that you should be aware of. The main benefit for married couples was the married couples' allowance. However, from 6th April 2000, this was abolished for married couples below the age of 65 years and will be replaced by the children's tax credit from 6th April 2001.
