SKYPE - can't hear me...

Options
Hopefully there will be skype users here... I'm sure it's a small problem but i've tried everything i can think of. My Skype used to work fine and suddenly i'm having problems... I can see and hear everybody but they can't hear me.. i've tried the test sound service and same pb....I understand it's a problem with the microphones but can't work out how to sort it out -especially as it used to work and as far as am aware i haven't changed anything.
any ideas/suggestions welcome! thanks

Have you tried a different microphone? Just because it used to work, it doesn't mean it hasn't gone faulty...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Make sure its still plugged in, and in the right port, stupid i know, but it might have been pulled out by accident. Also check cable for visual damage.

Secondly, start> control panel> sounds and audio devices>voice> volume> and make sure its not muted or slid to the bottom.

Have you had any updates for the program? Sometimes updates change the mic/speakers to a (apparent) random default, I know I get this sometimes with teamspeak.

  • One of my sisters had a similar problem once and phoned me to ask my help. I hate helping over the phone because being sisters they will not stay on the same page and wobble off into all kinds of distractions. I admit to getting a little short tempered sometimes.

Anyway, I persisted and for about an hour or so I took her through all the sound set up things without any result until she butted in and said, "Oh the little green light isn't on". She uses a Logitech stick microphone with an on/off button in the base which lights up green when the microphone is on. Press for on and press for off.

I don't need to explain further do I?

  • thanks all.
I'm using built-in microphone on a laptop (sorry should have said).

you might be right with the updates though...but not sure which ones...

erm, is there a FN+Fx option to kill the mic, same as some have to enable/disable wireless?

Check the audio settings under Tools, Options. I've come across this before where the mic level has mysteriously been turned right down.

  • Hi there I have had the exact same issue for ages and can't fix it. Searching the net it appears that this is a common problem which seems to be unfixable! I have tried every kind of fix known and even reinstalling and still not working - so have given up unfortunately. Hopefully you will have better luck than me in getting a fix
  • Have you got the option of plugging in a headset/mic. If this works then it may be just that the laptop microphone has broke. I suppose that can happen.
