Amazon sent me 2 instead of 1 - what would you do?

Options
Hello all,

Bought an item from Amazon for around £30, and to my surprise 2 of the item showed up, rather than just the one I ordered. I checked, and the invoice number is the same for each, so obviously an error.

My first thoughts were to contact Amazon and send one back to them, however a friend disagrees, with the attitude they messed up, why bother?

For me, it feels like a small form of stealing. But then again, on the same level, say I went into ASDA and was obviously undercharged for something, I certainly wouldn't go back and return it - I'd probably buy a couple more!

What do you think? Similar scenarios, or completely different?

Be interested in hearing your opinion - regardless though, I'll be returning the item to Amazon :)

Thanks,
Jay

I would ring them up and tell them.

    I would rest easier.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Send it back, contact customer services explain mistake and ask if they will send a pre-paid postage labels.

Happened a few years ago to me with a mail order firm recieved 2 of everything however invoice showed quantity as one, they got all of the extras back.

It pays to be honest, one day it will come back to you and someone will do something honest for you.

I would call them and let them know. They should send you a prepaid envelope or something to return it so you're not out of pocket.

in my experience...Amazon will notice eventually, and they will have the right to charge you, if you want to take that risk then go ahead...
  • I know someone who ordered some consumable items from Amazon and they sent double, told them just to keep it as it was more hassle to send it back.

Its stealing if you knowingly keep something you are not entitled to.

Don't just send it back - phone them and explain.

I am guessing that if you just send one back, they will think it is a return - and refund you!

Um, your friend's got a bad attitude?

Seriously, mistakes happen. It's churlish and opportunistic to benefit from those mistakes. What would your friend say if it had been a mistake made by you in Amazon's favour (e.g. you'd somehow managed to pay them twice)? Should they just think 'customer messed up, we'll keep the money'?

People who are quick to take advantage of others' genuine mistakes always seem to be the ones ranting and shrieking if that mistake isn't in their favour... strange that. But you're making the right decision anyway because you're clearly a decent person :)

The Asda question does throw a little confusion into the mix; mistakes like these are not a black and white situation and people will consider the amount of the mistake, the ease of rectifying that mistake, the possible penalties if they make no attempt to rectify that mistake, and the likelihood that there will be another mistake in Asda's favour (thereby somehow balancing the first mistake).

I can understand why someone wouldn't bother going back to a store to put right a quid's difference on a supermarket bill. At the end of the day, it's a decision to be made in accordance with your own conscience.

I ordered something from Amazon.com (again around £30) about 5 years ago, and it didn't turn up in the allocated time. I contacted Amazon and they sent another one out to me at no extra charge. Eventually they both turned up, and I kept both. I figured that Amazon were aware they'd sent me both so I should keep them!
Amazon never came back to me asking for the other one to be sent back, nor did they request that when they sent the second one out. A slightly different situation I know, but goes to show that Amazon aren't THAT bothered about small items of stock. Just something for you to think about...

That doesn't mean they don't care about small items!! That means they offer good customer services by replacing the item quickly and likely filed a claim with the courier to recoup their losses. They never got back to you because they considered it 'lost'.

Ops case they made a genuine mistake and sent 2. I imagine they record all parcels dispatched from their warehouses and at some point their system will detect the discrepency.
