DS has tins from the Asda children range as DH and I like to eat a lot later than he needs to.

Have you considered saving some of your dinners from the night before for your little one the next day? Better financially and healthwise too :)

  • I'm another long-time watcher who thinks maybe it's time to pitch in and share, not just steal ideas from everyone else! This week, the boyfriend and I will be eating:
Mon - tagliatelle carbonara and salad
Tue - Thai green chicken curry
Wed - cauli and broccoli cheese with sausages
Thu - turkey and lemon meatballs with spaghetti and salad
Fri - HM pizza and salad
Sat - pan fried sea bass with buerre blanc, sauteed potatoes and veg
Sun - stuffed chicken thighs, mash and veg

Everything is home made from scratch. I will also be making chorizo and bean soup for lunches for the week.

    Now I'm really hungry!

This is something I am trying to get DH to see. I suggested saving some of tonight's mustard chicken for DS tomorrow (I mean between us we are hardly going to notice a couple of tablespoons) but he is adamant that it will be too hot when I don't like particularly hot things so I know it won't be. Or he will say the chicken will be too tough being re-heated etc. I think that maybe this week I will sneakily it some aside for him, let him try it the following evening and if he doesn't like it we have about a week's worth of tins anyway...
  • Hi Glitzer

Could I make a couple of suggestions if you don't mind?

Perhaps by taking out a portion of what you have cooked "for the freezer" before you dish it up might make your meals stretch a bit further.

If you do as Trixie suggests and use your food to feed your Little One, then it makes it so much easier to get your child to eat what you do which saves time and money too.

Also don't try to go too mad on the menu planning at first because then it can feel very restrictive and if you are anything like me, you start to rebel and do something different! Add in some of the family's favourites too so you have something to look forward to.

It does become second nature and although I only posted my menu plan for the first time today, I've been doing it for a year and it's really helped our finances.

    Good luck
    Pauline

I've never had chicken go tough when reheated so wouldn't worry about that, and at 17mo he should be fine chewing a bit if it's shredded/cut small :)

you can always adapt it slightly for hot things like chilli and maybe put a bit of mince and the sauce before you add chilli in etc, or this mustard sauce, presume it's a white sauce with mustard added in? could just portion DS's out before you add it - kids get used to spice if you do it gently and slowly and the earlier the better imo anyway :)

I like this idea of setting aside the "for the freezer" portions before dishing up!

I think I need to get more frozen veg; we always have fresh veg for our roast dinners but despite telling DH I planned to give DS our dinner tomorrow, he served up 3 chicken breasts between the two of us, then said one each would have been enough if we had veg to go with it. So I have already added frozen peas and sweetcorn to next week's shopping list.

It was just something I made up! Bit of English mustard, Dijon and wholegrain mustard with olive oil poured over the chicken breasts.

That's the thing, DS has always been great, managing mince for example a lot earlier than his contemparies.
  • mmmmm, quick question - as I'm blown away with what most of you are eating! :D

Where do you get all your recipes / are they saved on here somewhere?

Several I'd love to try .......

The best thing to do is when you see something you like, ask the poster for the recipe and they will usually write it down (if it's their own or from a book) or link to the relevant forum or website for you.

The Grocery Challange has a HUGE recipe collection in the first posts on the first page...

many recipes I have are from asking for recipe ideas with certain meats, and reading the forums etc etc.

    Hope that Helps,

PS. Stroganoff is easy, cook sliced mushrooms, add stir fry beef strips, add sour cream, flavour with a lot of Paprika and some salt and pepper, simmer a few minutes and serve with Rice. If you like spinach add it in near the start.
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

I have ALWAYS meal planned ever since I first went away to university at 18...I don't understand how you could not, how do you know what to buy? it baffles me...

But anyway, this thread looks fun so I hope you don't mind if I join, albeit slightly belatedly :)

Monday 26th - (on own, OH on business) pasta with HM tomato sauce and veg
Tuesday 27th - broad bean and bacon risotto
    Wednesday 28th - seafood pasta
Thursday 29th - ginger and chilli beef stir fry
Friday 30th - (on own again) bolognaise (from freezer)
Saturday 1st - (still on own) HM soup
Sunday 2nd - (OH still away but family coming for lunch) - roast dinner, will probably get a big chicken

Wow, mine looks really dull (and full of pasta..) compared to everyone else's exciting menus!
