Hi all
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but i figured you helpful people would be able to give me the best advice.
Im planning on buying my own place at some point this year and i have made a bet with my mum that i will go to Aldi and buy my first weeks food shopping with the grand total of £10. Now im not including things like bread/milk etc as i imagine il be getting these too frequently to make them count in this particular shop. lol!
Im thinking of buying things like Pasta, rice, noodles, soup, chicken fillets, kind of staple things to reuse for different meals throughout the week.
Is this possible and does anyone have any good ideas how to make this work to my advantage? I think i can just manage it however i could prob use some assistance on whats the best combinations etc.
Looking forward to all your helpful advice!
Regards
Ginch

Best way to sort it would be to work out a weeks meal plan that will come in around that budget.
Might be a little difficult the first week as you will have no storecupboard of herbs, stock cubes etc but I'm sure it could be done with a bit of imagination.
Will it be 3 meals a day or just breakfast and evening meal?
Have a look at the meals for 50p thread to get some ideas.
Breakfast should be easy - bag of porridge, box of cereal or a loaf for toast.
Evening meals based around pasta, potatoes, pulses, rice etc.
Tinned tomatoes def a staple too.

Also get thangs that will 'double-up', eg fresh veg that will go in a curry, go in to make a vegi pasta sauce, make a soup, serve as an accompaniament to sausages or a roast. Box of eggs - omellette, big yorkies to go with roast, or to eat on their own laden with veg??0

Chicken fillets are fairly pricey, in lidl they do a boneless turkey joint for about £4, I make it last two nights for a family, if aldi do something similar it could do you for quite a few nights, in stir frys etc, I realise to start with thats half your budget, but noodles, pasta etc are cheap to go with it, or perhaps its something to bear in mind when you've got more established. A pack of sausages could last you two nights.
Good luck, hope you do it!0 -
Is the £10 a week for one person? If it is it will be quite easy. I spend £11 a week for 3 people.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I'm reading this wioth great interest as I'm planning on going to our local Aldi for the first time today, and I'm not too sure what to expect. I priced up my shopping online last night. Admittedly it was Sainsburys so not the cheapest but it came in at around £18, so if I could get it down more, I'd be really impressed.
Are Aldi good for fruit and veg? I've heard Lidl mentionned a lot, so just wondered?Wealth is not measured by currency0 -
Guys it would be really helpful if somebody could write up a nutritional weekly meal plan (breakfast/lunch/dinner) both for people who eat meat and people who don't that is cheap as chips (if you'll excuse the pun).
I have to admit I'm terrible with spending money on food. I'd say I shop every week and a half and end up spending around £40-£50 each time just for myself and then eating out as well, food and drink is a huge chunk out of my salary every month.
I'm going to set a challenge for you all to come up with effectively a month of breakfast/lunch/dinner meals on a budget of £80 (assuming you have no basics, herbs, bread milk etc, this must all be included in the £80).
You don't have to submit a full month, maybe just a weekly plan or a few days, but if we compile a list of cheap meals that hold great nutritional value I think it's going to help a lot of people.I am a Mortgage Adviser. If anybody has specific meals that they love, send me a pm. Include the ingredients and how much the meal should cost in total. I'll start a collection of these recipies and maybe publish them online at a later date.
Anyway back on topic, one of my mates uses Aldi, there isnt one here but he regyularly feeds himself for a week on £15 comfortably so I presume £10 should be possible.I am a Mortgage Adviser. And there was me thinking i would have to live on cereal in the morning and toast on beans the rest of the day! lol
