How to eat for £10 a week

Options
There is always times when money is tight so how to make it go further

Tesoes 15 value eggs £1

What to do with them and how many meals will it make

Boiled egg for breakfast

poached for lunch

2 egg omlette for dinner

Thats £0.26p for 3 meals - but of course you have to add oil for cooking and salt to that. Not the most filling of diets either

500g mince meat around 72p

2 meals out of this

home made beefburgers using one egg to bind works out approx 40p each one for each meal.

sure posters can add a lot more to this.

Big sack of potatoes can make chips, roasties, potato pie, baked potato with fillings and mash.

Home made pancake batter can make filled yorkies and pancakes stuffed with onions and cheese or bacon.

I would go with one bag of savory flavoured soya from Holland & Barratt 375g. Add boiling water and you have enough for at least 4 different meals each of which would feed 4/5 people - cottage pie, spegetti bol, chilli, curry and all for only £1.28

Cholestrol aswell with all those egs, I limit the family to 3 a week inc everything. I am going to give that soya a try, been mixing Quorn with meat mince but it's working out expensive!

My corned beef thing I made last week would feed 8 at least and cost me under £2. Corned beef (one can), beans, carrots (lots), peas (lots), swede, veg stock, potatoes and some bread crumbs (from unused crusts) to thicken.

Beans are a handy one, but I usually but the 17p ones :) Windy city if you over do it of course.Pasta is a good cheap one and unlike potatoes not likely to rise hugely. Tinned tomatoes I use a lot of. Bowl of pasta with some grated cheese or even 1/4 a tin of tomatoes probably well under 50p.

I could never feed the family on £10 as I usually spend at least half that on fresh fruit and veg a week. Something I refuse to comprimise on myself.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • You cant consume cholestrol, it is produced in the pancreas. Any food with it in passes straight through you. So eating eggs wont increase your levels

Of course your diet will effect the amount of the cholestrol you body produces.

buy a pack of 4 chicken thighs for about£2.50, skin two to make soup then chop the meat into a curry or sweet and sour sauce, then have the other two microwaved with mash and peas and some gravy

Nice tip bommer - may have a go with this as my lot can't tell when I'm giving them real mince or quorn mince and I think quorn can be expensive!

    Netto sell spaghetti at 16p per 500g = 38p per 1 kg.

I have to say that eating some fresh vegetables is essential for health. Learn to sprout beans. I buy cheap chick peas, sold in large bags at my local Asian/Middle Eastern food shop. They are easy to sprout the the resulting small leaves are rich in vitamins and other nutrients.

I also sprout mung beans but let them grow until they have a little double leaf, about 1 inch in length each, then cut them low on the stem and cook them as greens. Very delicate and healthy, as they contain beta carotene, chlorophyll and other essential nutrients.

I believe we must always take our health into account when planning low cost meals.

    :)

Sorry I was always of the impression that adults digest approx 25% of the cholestrol they consume, higher in children. With the damaged pancreas and liver I have I understand completely that the body passes a lot through it.
