I do try to get lots fruit & veg, organic fruit is cheaper than it used to be in asda & tescos. Tesco value maltloaf is lovely & OH like asda smartprice chocolate ! Mind you my christmas food shopping list looks a little scary, & definitely not £10 a week !!!!!An average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T

Home made soup (lentil and tomato using tinned tomatoes). Corned beef hash (keep some back for lunchtime sandwiches). BOGOF anything that will help your budget. Is it just for you ? Will be easier if it is because children need more variety in their diet every day. Adults can "make do" for a couple of weeks or more."Life's too short to stuff a mushroom" - Shirley Conran...she wasn't an Old Styler then, was she? :rotfl:0

Quasar wrote:I buy cheap chick peas, sold in large bags at my local Asian/Middle Eastern food shop. They are easy to sprout the the resulting small leaves are rich in vitamins and other nutrients.
Hiya Quasar,
I also sprout mung beans, they are delish. Can you tell me if the process is the same for chick peas please? I have some dried ones in the cupboard and would love to have a go at sprouting them. How long would it take to get sprouts and and what stage would you recommend using them?
With the mung I soak overnight in water. Drain in the morning and put in a transparent glass jar of plastic container. All I do is cover the lid of the jar/container and place on the windowsill in my kitchen. I rinse twice daily and drain.
Thanks,

bommer wrote:No sorry not found this type in either Asda or Tesco, I'm the same so I normally buy a couple of bags, at a time and just rehydrate about 3oz at a time which is enough for 4 people. The recipes I use are ones from an old Rosemary Connelly book so are good if you want to loose weight as well as save money.
Hi
Adsa do the dried soya mince but it is not where you would expect to find it. Usually in my store it is with the pulses, dried peas etc - look there.

£10 budget is per person if can stretch to more meals great ...........yrs ago when in dire straights I managed to live on £6 a week for food found the bags of veggie burger and sausage mix a great help then and used to buy then 1 lb of mince and divide up and freeze along with a large tin of toms which I divided up into single portions and froze.
So what would £10 buy you today
To make it easier £40 for 1 month
15 value eggs £1
3kg pasta £1
4 long lasting loaf 54p each £2.16
4 tins of branson beans from certain shops £1 more beans than sauce compare to cheapo ones
2 tins of sardines asdas at 18p each = 36p
Sainsbury's dried soya mince is about 53p for 200g which reconstitutes to 800g 2 pkts £1.06
Frozen value chicken portions 2.5kg £2.65
10 kg potatoes about £1.50 value range
1 cabbage 60p
1 bag frozen sprouts 99p
Tesco value apples 90p
1 kg carrots 99p
1 kg peas 63p
Frozen pork chops £2.26 800grams
Cornflakes 44p 500g
Own brand wheat biscuits 64p for 36
Long life milk 6 x 1 ltr £3.18
1 kg butter me up £1.18
Sugar 80p
Tea 160 bags value 60p
Veg oil 57p
Tins sweetcorn 4 at 17p each 68p
3 tins of tuna 30p each – 90p
Longlife juices 4 litres £2.20
8 tins toms 1.04p
Stock cubes 50p
Value sauces ketchup etc £1.50
This lot under £30 leaving money over for bogoffs, discounted goods etc.
So I think it can be done

Ok
presuming that its a single person i think £40 a month is very managable. (i spend £40 every 2 weeks for 2 adults, 1 2 year old and a jack russell)
Ok so heres what id buy
Tescos Value sliced loaf x 3 = 28p each = 84p (divide in half and freeze - defrost as needed)
Value apples - 90p
Banana's - 90p (6 loose)
Tescos Value Potatoes - £1.49 for 5kg
Tescos Value Mushrooms - 63p for 250g
Tescos Value Carrots - 68p for 1kg
Tescos small swede - 49p
Loose Onions - 28p
Tesco Whole chickens - 2 for £5 (keep one in freezer until needed, then when you cook one read rubber chicken posts! ie soup, other meals etc)
Tesco Value Mince - 800g - 2 packs £2.96 (could be divided in two and frozen so you'd technically have 4 lots of mince)Tesco Value Butter - 59p for 500g
Tesco Mild Cheddar - £2 - (cut in half and freeze other half until needed)
Tesco Value Low Fat Yogurt 4x125g - 29p (cherry, peach, strawberry and blackberry)
Milk - id go to Iceland - £1 for 4pints x3 - £3 (freeze until needed)
Tesco Value Oats - 48p for 1kg
Tesco Value Cornflakes - 44p for 5oog
Tescos Sultanas - 59p for 500g (use with porridge for a change/snack/baking)
Tesco Self Raising Flour - 27p for 1.5kg (baking?)Tesco Plain Flour - 27p for 1.5kg (again baking)
Tesco Value Stock Cubes - 19p x 2 - 38p (get 1 chicken and one veg)
Granulated Sugar - 1kg - 72p
Tesco Pasta - £1 for 3kg (to save even more you could go for their vlaue quills at 19p for 500g)
Tesco Value baked beans - 17p x 2 - 34p
Tesco Value Spaghetti - 15p x 2 - 30p
Tesco 24 sausages - £1.02
Tescos mixed veg - 95p for 1kg
Tescos Tea Bags - 29p for 80 x 2 = 58p
Tesco Low Calorie Orange Juice - 16p for 1ltr x 2 = 32p
Tesco Low Calorie Lemon Juice - 19p for 1ltr x 2 = 38p
Tesco Low Calorie Apple/Blackcurrant - 19p for 1 ltr x 2 = 38p
Tesco Value eggs - £1 for 15
That all comes to £29.57 so you still have £10 left for the other household stuff - ie shampoo, toilet roll, any pet food etc or even put a few quid towards some food saving stamps so you've got next Xmas sorted!

Lemon - i know that feeling hun
Last Xmas i was on a super tight budget - thank god it is marginally better this year! JUST!!
But i had me, bf and out little boy (then 18 months) and i had about £40 for a month to include toiletries etc - harder than it looks but managable.
Its amazing how many bargains you can sniff out when you have too - i actually found we were eating alot better then because i use to raid the reduced section of the supermarket! so id have alot of cheap apples and broccolli, 1kg bags of sprouts for 50p etc. still have a snoop round there nowadays too as cant afford to be picky and if need be i buy the stuff abotu to go off and make soup!Time to find me again0
