Can`t fathom this out . Internet working fine . However I have been trying to update various bits of software . For example Microsoft Essentials or Spybot . Each time it tells me that they cannot contect to server , check internet connection .
The only firewall running is the router and I fail to see why this should happen . Guys , any ideas please?

I had a similar problem, it was the firewall. It was displaying " Explorer unable to display page". I switched off the firewall (Zonealarm) and it worked fine.
I thought I had a problem too but it was the firewall, although it doesn't look like the firewall is causing it just IE.
Switch it off and give it a go... Don't forget to switch it back on

You may already have tried some of this, but I will give it all anyway.
1. Reboot both router and PC - any joy?
2. in the command prompt enter: ipconfig - you should then see the ip address of your PC eg 192.168.1.2, and your router eg 192.168.1.1 - if you don't see these then you have a router connection issue.
3. If you do see the router settings as in 2, then try resetting some values:
- ipconfig /flushdns
- netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
- netsh winsock reset
then reboot your PC
4. If there are still connectivity issues then double check your firewall settings, temporarilly turn off to see if you do get connectivity - if you do then you need perhaps to reset yr router to factory settings and set up again as standard - then reconsider your firewall options. (this is assuming, as you indicated, that the Windows Firewall is off and you do not have any firewall on the PC itself).0
