Virgin phone line but broadband from different provider...??

My mum is with virgin media but I don’t think the price of 22.40 for broadband and phone line (free eve and weekend) is that competitive. She wants to stay with Virgin as doesn't want to change her no.
I have a question. Can she pay for the standard line rental with virgin but get her free eve and weekend calls and broadband somewhere else? I ask as I know it works differently with cable than it does with ADSL lines through BT….???

Basically, no.
If she wants a cheaper deal she can port her number to a new provider. All she has to do is call the new provider and say she wants to keep her number but move her phone line to them, and as long as it's a company that provide "home phone", like BT or Sky (for example) they'll do everything for her.0 -

Hi,
I thought this but I have rang BT and Talk Talk and apparantly she would need a new number. :-(Recently married and loving it x0 -
Ah ok.
In that case she can't have a Virgin phone line and broadband from another provider.0 -

Is it detrimental that she keep the same number?0

If your mom is on a VM CABLE phoneline (as opposed to Virgin National) then she CANNOT have any broadband on the VM phoneline as they work differently from the likes of BT.Cable phonelines do not connect into the BT network for many many miles until it reaches the Head End & the street Mux (2 VM boxes next to each other) contain no broadband equipment.
If she want's to move provider, she'll need to get a new phoneline installed or the old BT type one re-activated.0 -

Not really, she has had the same number for years and really doesn't want to change!Recently married and loving it x0 -

I guess that's the choice she has to make.
Keep the same number at a higher cost. Or, get a new number and enjoy a cheaper deal

I'm not convinced that she would have to have a new number unless the number was originally allocated by Virgin.
Either way, at present you are paying £22.40 for phone with evening and weekend calls + broadband. In December BT line rental is going up to £14.60 per month which only leaves a difference of £7.80 with what you are paying now including broadband. I know BT offer a reduction in line rental if you pay 12 months in advance but you may get hit for installation fees from BT and cancellation fees from Virgin.
Given that Virgin broadband is far superior to anything BT or anyone else can offer is it really worth all the time, effort, expense and worry over losing your phone number when, in reality you will save little or nothing (or possibly pay even more than now).
Similarly with Talk Talk, they offer a good initial deal but this will increase to over £20/month after one year. Is it worth saving 60p per week to achieve this? I'm with them and find them ok but broadband speed is only 3 m/b and I get line dropouts on a daily basis.
Hope this helps.0
