  • If the review had been written by Janey Lee Grace from the Steve Wright show it would have been a different thing entirely.

Janey 'gets it' so wears what she describes as 'charity shop chic', eats and cooks organics where ever possible and is as green as she can be, there's no doubt the some of the tips in the book are already in her daily routine, I can't imagine her with a kitchen cupboard stuffed with Cillit Bang type products - she'd go for green and use bi-carb, old fashioned washing soda and vinegar etc.

Last week there was a discussion on the show about mobile phones, Steve was enthused about the lastest wizz-bang phone, Janey said that she just wanted a phone to talk to people with, 'I'm old style' she said......

I would like to know what Martin has to say about this - he may not have written the book, and may not do everything in it, but he was happy to put his name to it, and to encourage people to visit this website and use the old style section - so for her to be so rude and patronising about a large number of Martins moneysavers is disgusting.
In this climate of global warming too, you would think she has more sense than to recomend that we continue filling the world with chemicals, purely because people like her prefer to waste money on time saving rather than things that are more economical and better for you. Ok, sticking cheap coke down your loo instead of chemical cleaner isnt going to save the ice caps, but it might help an asthmatic child or make your excema better!!!! (im not saying old style will stop these things, but i know that chemical smells makes my neices asthma worse, and im sure it does for others too - my DDs excema is better if we dont use bubble baths too)

I'd liek to know where the bit in the book is about making your own coat hangers from off cuts of wood, bu88ered if I can find it in teh book or have ever heard of it comming up on the OS forum:confused: Obviously more interested in entertaining her readers than giving a balanced opinion.

And for me to save £1k on my car insurance Direct Line would have to give me £700 credit. I suspect that if she sold her car & downsized to something a tiny bit more economical (but still did the job; i.e got her from A to B) she could wipe out the balance of her credit card debt & still have enough cash to treat herself to a over-priced tube of hand cream:rolleyes:

Totally agree with your first point but with regard to the car insurance RM lives and works in central London and is a journalist - both factors which add huge increases to car insurance. I have been told that the justification for the high premium for journalists is that they may have famous people in their car and therefore the risk of high third party compensation claims is much greater than for "ordinary folks" like you and I.
Proud to be dealing with my debts
  • Her sneering is a bit infantile isn't is? I tend to think that journalists write according to the perceived views of their audience, so maybe she/the ed feel that Independent readers wouldn't OS? Don't think that this is true.
  • I put apples, lemons, butter, eggs and salad into cookingbynumbers and didn't get a mushroom omelette

I haven't read the book but I bet its full of useful tips and she's picked out some of the extreme/unusual examples to produce her biased article.

She's also missed the point - you can follow as few or as many of the tips as you feel comfortable with.

What a load of rubbish! I also notice, that short of emailing them which will obviously remain private unless they decide to divulge it, there is no way of responding to this article and voicing an opinion! The narrow-mindedness of some people, especially those who think they're better off although what counts as better off is all a matter of opinion - I'd rather be at home all day to tend to the house etc and look after/play with DD when she gets home from school than go out to work and have to pay for childcare, cleaner, gardener or spend my "free" time cooking/cleaning/gardening and neglecting to spend time with my partner and daughter! I guess you could say that THAT is an old style attitude, but even if I went out to work, we would be no better off financially due to extra expenses..... could she give up work and look after a home/family and still use the over priced cosmetics? I don't think she could! :p
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.
Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!

used to be £50K in debt!!!!! so not exactly great. mind you she's got that down by about £29000 in only a year, I think

I remember about two years ago this Rosie woman wrote about having £40k debt on her credit cards and frozen bank accounts, but then it transpired she and her husband owned property here and in Paris worth about £2m  Article here. So not exactly skint. No wonder she doesn't need to be OS!!

Reading remarks on this thread, I'd have to say three words spring to mind - pot, kettle and black.

Get over it. Someone doesn't agree with you. So what?

Nope, it's a total myth that the risk of carrying someone famous in your car puts the insurance up. I used to work in theater, including the west end, and worked for one of the big London radio stations and it did not directly affect my car insurance or anyone elses I knew/worked with. The things which do affect your permiums most, along wiht your address, tend to be the size/value of your car & bad driving!
