article on "thrifty ways for modern days"

I'm not saying it's a good article!! It's from Rosie Millard's Thrifty Living column (which I read every week even though she doesn't have much grasp of what thrifty living is about). I don't agree with her take on the book but I thought MSE-ers might like to know about the article. It's in The Independent (but don't hold that against them!)

I totslly disagree with her comments about sending family members round the bend. Infact, my mates and I try to out do each other with the most bonkers and crazy way to save money or do it 'old style'. Am I'm 28, not some sad sap who doesn't have better things to do with my time, I just enjoy living my life the way I do. So ner ner Rosie!

Not too impressed with her article. She's deliberately offhand about the effectiveness of OS style. There are ways of thinking about how to do things differently and keep your money for other treats to perhaps pay for that lovely clarins hand cream you prefer to olive oil and sugar. I think she's a bit of a (polite-by her own admission) idiot.

yeah, not to mention that "that lovely clarins hand cream" will be full of the chemical crap most cosmetics are full of! as well as hugely overpriced given that it's mostly marketing!!

... in addition, I'm not sure she's represented Martin's views fairly – she makes it sound as if he can't really be bothered with old-style money saving, whereas he's clearly very proud of the book and happy to endorse that sort of frugality

used to be £50K in debt!!!!! so not exactly great. mind you she's got that down by about £29000 in only a year, I think

Ah I didnt realise the whole point of her column clearly... sorry!

She got it down because she gets paid good money to write. If I recall from the book Martin simply says that not all of the tips are for everyone and includes himself in this. He suggests adopting the tips that suit you. So whilst he doesn't want to perhaps rub his own hands with Olive oil and sugar he would check buycosmetics.com and be OS by sticking some value coke down the loo!!
