Broadband + Phone Line Rental query

Hi Guys,
Looking at getting broadband installed into my flat. Firstly we currently don't have a home phone so im assuming the line isn't active so will have to sort that out. WOuld i just have to speak to BT to activate the line?
Secondly - when searching the broadband deals on the main page, a lot of the broadband providers request you take there home phone service as well so you have to pay for the line rental or can you use any provider for the phone line rental? Was looking at primus for a cheap phone deal as won't be using the phone.
Thanks
Matt

If you go with a standalone BB provider, they generally require you to have a BT line installed.
Personally, I would go with a provider that supplies both phone line and broadband as that suggests they are using their own equipment at the exchange (Local Loop Unbundling), you'll have a better online experience.
Either way you'll have to pay some sort of line rental.
Which ISP's can you take phone line and BB from?0 -
I was thinking of getting the primus saver phone line rental as it is the cheapest and then getting broadband. But can you have a seperate line rental from the broadband provider? I have read on some that you are required to switch your line rental to the broadband provider??
The boradband checker pulled these results:- BT Wholesale ADSL
- BT Wholesale ADSL Max
- TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
- Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)

You can have the Primus line, but most (if not all) BB providers without an LLU presence insist on a BT line due to the fact they'll be delivering rebranded BT broadband down the line.
If you have a BT line, and you pay line rental to BT, you can still have another BB supplier.
Out of the list you have, Talk Talk is your best bet. Phone line and BB, job done, all in one place and only 1 company to contact if it goes wrong.0 -
Thanks for the response...
Thinking of going with Orange though for their unlimited Broadband...so having the line rental with Primus and broadband with Orange, would this work?0 -
Nope. Orange will supply your home phone too - line rental is £12.75.
