My TV channels have stopped working - please advice

Hi Folks
I have a small portable TV in my bedroom, which is about 10 years old. I got the normal 5 channels - BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4, and 5. I don't think it is compatible with HD etc.
Last week my BBC2 and Channel 4 stopped working for some reason, and last night I discovered that the rest of the channels have also stopped working.
Could there be a fault in the TV, or do you think it has something to do wth the fact that my TV is about 10 years old and that I will need to buy some sort of freeview box in order to view the normal channels again?
Thanks in advance for your response.

The old analog signal has now been switched off in most parts of the country. All you need is a free view box (from about £10) and a dissent signal. Check your TV has a Scart socket on the back before you buy. If not, some freeview boxes come with a RF out.0

If its a portable it presumably has its own aerial - to get digital Freeview signals you will most probably need an external aerial on the property as well as a compatible Freeview box.0

The digital switchover has been widely publicised for months, and the target audience includes YOU also, the Sutton Coldfield analogue transmitters have now been switched off in the early hours of the 21.9.11, only digital tv programs are available like you fear via a suitable tv or freeview box . Asda are offering a 19" freeview ready tv for £85 last time I visited.0 -
I suspect this is a wind up.That gum you like is coming back in style.0

This is part of a new government initiative to get people off their sofas and experience the benefits of exercise.
By removing the fantasy worlds of Big Brother and X Factor from their lives it is hoped they will realise there is a whole new world out there and encourage them to 'get a life'.
I believe this is an initiative put forward by the Lib Dems as part of their pact with the Tories and will be part of Nick Cleggs closing speech at their conference in Birmingham this afternoon.
Unfortunately you won't be able to watch it!0 -
Hi Folks
Mamy thanks for your advice.
Penrhyn and Neil49, can you please give some constructive advice rather than make sarcastic comments.
Have I said something in the past to upset you?0 -
My mums signal went last night/today on the Sutton COldfield transmitter.
We had already set her up with a new telly with freeview HD.
Has been aggitated for months that she couldn't get Yesterday as all her friends could.
Luckily her smart Sony TV retuned itself and now she has Yesterday and HD - joy of joys...
If you can afford it drop your old telly and go and get anew freeview one and enjoy the bright new image and flat screen. If not get a box but as others have said if you have a portable you may need a new aerial. An indoor portable one may well be OK my MIL has one and it is fine .
For £40 the digital people will visit you and set you up (box and aerial) if all else fails - just google "digital switchover""If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I think Penrhyn and Neil49 could not believe that anyone named 'geek84' would not have noticed all the adverts floating around about the digital switch off.
Most of the other posters have given you the correct advice. You only need to buy a freeview receiver which connects to your aerial and to your tv. They are quite cheap and easy to set up.
Like you I lost some channels a week or two ago and yesterday lost the rest. Having already bought a humax freeview recorder box I am now watching all those channels and more in digital now from the Emley Moor transmitter.0 -
