How about creating your pages manually rather than using a WYSIWYG editor? It's not as hard as it sounds and often can lead to better site design.

http://www.w3schools.com/ is a great resource to get you started.

Otherwise, NVU is a free WYSIWYG editor, I like it because the pages it produces are always W3C Standards Compliant.

Daniel Glazman announced on September 15, 2006 that he has stopped official development on Nvu and he is developing a successor to it, tentatively called Composer (or Mozilla Composer 2.0), as a Mozilla.org project. It is written from scratch and based on Mozilla trunk Gecko 1.9 and XULRunner. PHP and CSS will be supported. A community-driven fork, KompoZer, maintains Nvu codebase and fixes bugs until a successor to Nvu is released.
  • Not free but https://www.mrsite.co.uk allows you to design and host your own site for about £30 a year.

I've always used Claris Home Page. OK it's not W3C Standards Compliant because it's ancient but it produces pages that Google likes, it's really easy to use and it's effectively "free" because it's well and truly obsolete. All you have to do is find a copy. :)

    (Compatible with MacOS9 and Windows).

Thanks guys - I'm going to download NVU when I get home.

I've been speaking to my brother who has Dreamweaver I always thought this was more for animation flash etc. Anyone used it?

Mr site would set me back £40 ish might be worth it for simplicity and Serif seems cheap at £60 if its as good as it says

Dreamweaver is an html editor, it just integrates better with Macromedia Flash, which as the name suggests, is the actual tool used to create flash animations. I've used Nvu and Dreamweaver on a regular basis and can heartily recommend the former as a great free editor.

Don't forget though that Mr Site includes hosting.
