I'm still happy with an Upright Hoover complete with dust bag.
  • I have a Dyson animal cylinder and it has a head with rotating brushes that you can turn off for hard floors or long piled carpets. Its great. I always had uprights but the cylinder is much easier to use-as Innys says you aren't pulling it around all the time, and its easier to get under furniture (I can do under the coffee table and chair without moving them :)You just have to be careful going round corners that it doesn't bash into the edges ;) It also has a "hard floor tool" that I prefer to the main one as it seems to move across the floor better (and you can lift it easier!) that's just a plastic head with a brush border-like a traditional cylinder head.
  • Thank you all for your contributions - it is exactly the sort of thing I wanted to hear!

I guess I have only considered uprights as they are the only sort of cleaner I have had - take on board all the 'pro cylinder' comments though...................

The Sebo cleaners seem to be highly rated and I may hang on and get one of those but wondered if there was a cheaper option around.

    Thanks again!

    From Which? magazine:-

    Cylinder vacuum cleaners

    Pros

    • Lighter and more compact than upright vacuum cleaners.
    • Better for tackling stairs, upholstery, under furniture and in hard-to-reach areas.
    • More reliable overall than upright vacs (according to our latest vacuum cleaner reliability survey).
    • Usually quieter.
    Cons

    • The hose section can be difficult to store tidily.
    • Generally not as good at picking up pet hair.
    • Can be more difficult to control and manoeuvre.

    Upright vacuum cleaners

    Pros

    • Good at picking up pet hair.
    • Easier to store than cylinders if you have the space.
    • Quick at covering large areas of floor.
    Cons

    • Can be noisier.
    • Heavier than cylinders.
    • More difficult to use on stairs.
  • another vote for the Sebo X4 here. HAve had mine for about 5 years, still works great. Never had to replace anything apart from the filters. When it does need replacing would go straight for another Sebo.
