Any recommendations for an upright vacumm cleaner please?

Not sure if this is the right place to post but my vacumm cleaner is giving up the ghost and I will very soon need to buy a new one.

There are so many on the market that I have no idea where to start! Don't want to spend a fortune either - or is it better to spend more for long term value..........?

Any views gratefully accepted thank you!

  • Hi Rosieprimrose
My other half had a upright VAX and i spent most of the time putting the belt back on the pulley and would loss suction very quickly,in fact a waste of money put on Freecycle. Now using a Panasonic upright and have to say very good indeed ( available from Tesco & comet & Argos) no complaints from the Boss.
    Hope this helps

Another Sebo X4 Extra Automatic fan here. Blows my previous Dyson out of the water. Works on wood/laminate flooring and carpet/rugs without pressing any buttons or fiddling around - detects the floor type automatically and adjusts the brush bar height to compensate.

I LOVE my Dyson. I have had it for 4 years now and works just as well as it did the first day i bought it!
I got it in the sales for £129.99!! BARGAIN!

Why are you only considering upright vacuums?

I had one and will never buy another. After all, you spend your time pushing a motor round. I don't care how light people say theirs are, they have to be more effort than a cylinder type vacuum.

... which you spend your time pulling around. Oh and cylinders don't have rotating brushes (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't used one for so long) so they don't shift dirt in carpets as well as ones with rotating brushes. Of course if you don't have carpets then this may be irrelevant.

No vacuum cleaner is ideal for all situations, its horses for courses.

Actually, you move the hose about and the cylinder bit is stationary most of the time. When was the last time you used your upright and the heavy bit with the motor in it was stationary most of the time? Never, I'm guessing.

Plus, you're also wrong about the rotating brushes - you can buy Henry vacuum cleaners with rotating brushes, if you really want them.

Finally, rotating brushes ruin looped carpets so if you have such carpets an upright is a bad idea anyway.

Another vote for the Sebo X4. Most money I've ever spent on a vacuum, but I wish I'd done it years ago.

  • I am an upright dyson fan. My sister has a Sebo though and loves it.
