I could be missing your point here, but don't they just give you 20% (whatever the VAT is at the time) back? Ie you're just getting 20% off the total so you are still paying the VAT..?

You have hit the point exactly on the head my friend. A VAT Registered retailer MUST pass on the output VAT content on all sales to the VAT MAN, which is ultimately paid by the purchaser. So offerring to pay the VAT suggests an open ended offer that can only be resolved by the sales agreement becoming self-resolving at a NIL balance to pay.

Glorified ways of saying 20% discount are fine as long as they don't mislead or misrepresent the truth of the matter - I respectfully suggest that the truth of such offers are that the VAT CONTENT calculated after any discount is always paid by the purchaser.

To give 20% back to the customer is subject to VAT refund regulations as the 20% cash-back/refund contains a VAT element that has to be accounted for.
  • My son and I have great fun going round Tescos and spotting their 'special offers'. We particularly liked the 'value' pack of 7 turkey steaks priced at £2. Fortunately I spotted that a 4 pack was only 74p on the shelf above in the freezer before taking advantage(?) of the larger value pack.

This week in Morrisons they were selling packs of own brand 2 x mini pork, cheese and pickle pies for £1.30, alongside packs of six own brand mini pork, cheese and pickle pies for £1.29.

I took a photo to illustrate the above but cannot work out how to attach it to this message !!

Look what I just saw on Tesco.com

Same price for an extra 25g and it doesn't even say the large one is on offer or anything! I know which I would buy!

  • Marks and Spencer: I've pointed it out to staff in store and even they took a while to see the discrepancy. Main culprit 12 slices streaky bacon which costs around £1.60 a packet (from memory) but if you fancy a bargain you can have 2 packets for £4!!! It's even marketed on the shelf with a cardboard wrapper around the double pack stating it is a value buy.

Also in M&S their larger bottles of cola (1l)are cheaper than the smaller bottles sold in the sandwich/lunch area.
  • Can't upload a photo - how dumb to ask us for photos only to be given a box to put a URL in and then tell me I can't :/

You need to upload your picture to an image site (Google "Image upload" and pick one), then use the URL it gives you for your picture, on here.
  • I saw one on the tv the other day, "most customers could save up to £XX by switching to us!". Is it me, or does this really mean nothing at all? "join us! you never know, there's a faint possibility that one of you will not be any worse off!" sorry, i will get off my soapbox now

Saw this on an insurance one and the tiny white writing said "53% of customers saved £xx". Well, I suppose that's just a majority! :rotfl:

I noticed an offer on packets of nuts in Tesco some time ago, at the bakery section. Two bags for £2 or something similar, but there were bags of nuts at 49p so if you bought two of them you'd be paying £1.02 more. I asked a member of staff and he couldn't explain about the offer, didn't have a clue.

I was in Aldi yesterday and they have Snackrite Stackers for 89p for 165g. Specially produced for Aldi. Just the same as Pringles but Aldi's own.
