O2 contract ending soon - advice please...

Hi all,

I currently have a contract with O2 through Carphone Warehouse, which expires on 3rd Jan 2012, however I am eligible to upgrade fom 3rd Dec 2011.

At the moment I have a Nokia N95 8GB phone, which after much use over the last 3 and a half years has generally served me well. Other than the fact it is now running quite slow and the charger socket is a bit iffy, it has served me well.

I have never been one for smartphones, however one thing that does appeal is the internet usage deals available on them and I would be interested in getting some apps/games.

Having read a few other threads on here, I understand that the iPhone5 may be arriving this year and was wondering if I could please get some advice on the following:

1) What's the best way to get a call from O2 retentions as I didn't get this when my contract ran out last time i.e. do I just request my PAC code on 3rd Dec?

2) Is the iPhone everything it seems hyped up to be - I know this is down to personal preference - however I have read good things about HTC and the odd decent comment about the SG2?

3) When the iPhone5 is released, what will likely happen to the iPhone 4? As at the moment this is free on certain monthly contracts with O2? I have read that they may bring out a 4GS model or reduce it to 8GB etc etc.

Thanks for any help received.
Gareth.

You contract doesnt end you just finish the minimum term, If you do nothing it goes to a 30 day rolling contract.
If you don;t call in to ask about an upgrade you won;t get anything.

Retentions are that to retain you as a customer, if you don't ask for a PAC code to leave they won't call you.

It is personal choice for me yes, for others no.

Depends if you want the freedom to potentially do anything in Android or the consistant look and feel of Apple apps both Apple and 3rd party, as Apple restrict what people can do.

Honestly the only people who know work for ,or closely with , Apple and will have signed Non dicolosure agreements.

Going on rumours and past history..

Apple may release Iphone 5 *and* a new version of Iphone 4. Historically when they release the next version they withdraw the old rather than sell it cheap. Your right that the rumours are they will drop the IP4 from 16 and 32 GB to 8GB, and the other is that the iPhone 5 won't be this year just a faster 4 (the 4GS).

Various phone companies around the worls have blacklisted the first few weeks in october for employee holidays so it's probably due then, but until Apple say all bets are off.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Apologies that it was I meant to say - I have gone on to a 30 day rolling contract before I started with my current one whilst I shopped around. In that case I will ask for my PAC code and await a call from retentions.

Well I don't have any other Apple products whatsoever so I wouldn't benefit necessarily from being able to link them up in anyway.

Are there many things that an iPhone can do apss/games wise that other smartphones can't do?

In that case I guess, like everyone else, it is just a case of waiting to hear.

The first question is, do you want to stay with O2? If not, then there are plenty of competitive deals on other networks, particularly if you go via a cashback site such as Quidco.

Second, you are looking to change right in the run up to Christmas when Iphone 5's will be in great demand as presents and dealers will be able to charge high prices. You may not even be able to get one.

Personally, if you want an Iphone 5 I would wait until the new year, but if you decide to go for another Nokia handset (on Windows) or an Android then there should be sufficient supplies in the run up to Christmas to get a good deal during December.

You can request your PAC at any time and it will be valid for a month. Typically it will either be sent to you by text message within an hour os so of requesting online (if O2 do that) or straight away if you speak to someone at O2. If you don't use it (and just stay on a rolling 30 day contract for the time being) then it will just lapse and you would then have to request a new one from O2 should you wish to move later.

Finally, if you want a new O2 contract but they won't play ball then you could switch to giffgaff (also on O2 network so no unlocking issues) port your number to them and then switch back again at a later date. A bit of a nuisance I know but it gives you the freedom to switch at any time you like as giffgaff offer either payg (at competitive rates) or goodybags that last a month at a time. There is no contract.
