Where can I buy an XP computer with warranty?

Hello all,

As the subject says: I am locked into XP because of some expensive software that I use, and would like to buy a laptop that is covered by a warranty. Dell no longer sell XP machines, and said that if I were to install XP on a new machine then that would void any warranty.

An additional consideration: since I intend to integrate the computer with my hi-fi system I would like a very quite machine.

Any ideas?

Is there something wrong with your existing machine?

What software - unless it's a hardware dongle related software it may run in a virtual machine or under xp compatibility mode.

The warranty issue is nonsense, warranty is for hardware, if something fails (probably won't), put W7 back on, they'll never know - however you may not be easily able to get all the drivers for xp for newer machines.

Some laptops have powerful sound if that avoids the hifi problem - separate box/cd player/media player is much easier though. If you want to use a laptop, the fan shouldn't be too noisy unless vents are blocked or you choose one with powerful (ie hot) gpu/processor

Novatech have live chat in office hours, ask them. You can buy a laptop without an operating system and I do not see how using a particular operating system could affect the warranty, however, if you use their live chat you get a transcript option so you would have it in writing

PC Specialist have a build your own option, and you could e-mail them with a list of must haves to see what they suggest, they would also answer the operating system position

Second novatech, I bought my new lappy from them 3 weeks ago, and they allow you to buy "sans os" since I already had win 7 pro retail that worked for me, and the sound is pretty good, speakers on top of keyboard plus USB 3 , sadly no eSata but hey USB 3 is pretty quick.

I use a supplier, and have done for over 5 years who supplies a number of commercial entities in the area with XP maxhines, with usual 12 month warranty, extendable upto 3 years for a fee. You may also request upgrades such as extra quiet psu/cpu fan to make it soundless.

As another poster indicated, provided you use Windows 7 Pro or better you can download the free XP Mode from microsoft - I have used it on a number of PCs and works well. XP Mode allows you to run XP software on WIn 7 machines irrespective of whether they are 32/74 bit architecture.

PM me and I will provide you with more information on where to get bespoke XP maxhines.

It may void their manufacturer's warranty, but your statutory rights remain intact. Installing XP will not break a laptop and any manufacturing or design fault which appears within a reasonable time (certainly a year minimum for something like a new laptop) will be Dell's responsibility.

HP {business} machines still allow the option of an xp pro install -- as opposed to win 7.

  • i dont see how any expensive software is locked to xp, xp is pretty ancient now and if im right every software is compatible with vista and windows 7, if not which i highly doubt windows 7 has virtuall xp meaning you can run xp from inside windows 7
  • Well some software (old) won't install and run on 64bit editions of Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 but as already said you can run XP mode (vitual XP) on Win7 professional / ultimate

Of course some hardware won't run either due to lack of drivers so that might put a dampner on using a newer operating system.

Care to tell us what this software is?
