Have finally responded to Martin's needling about paying too much for AA roadside, relay and home start insurance. Been with them for many years, like you I kind of like the idea of the bigger providers with plenty of patrols and a known track record.
So when my renewal came through I haggled, and got it down to £47 from £91, i.e. they are going to charge me road-side assistance cover but throw in relay and home-start for free.
All I had to do was quote the lowest rate found in Martin's Travel & Transport section under road side recovery insurance.
    Certainly worth a try!

    Great saving!

I will be a new customer but will have my info to hand and see how much they would like some new business. I will post my results. For info my wife was always on her Dads AA cover but had to do this in her maiden name and it never covered me so i think we will use the fact that she has in effect been a customer for years as a lever...."If you don't ask you don't know what the answer is!"

    Thanks:T

OK, i'll apologise in advance if this looks too much like an advert... but
I work for an independent insurance brokers and we have access to a cheap breakdown scheme with RAC:

It's £68.25 per year and provides Roadside, Recovery, At Home and European cover - the cover is vehicle based.

The policy is provided by a company called Broker Direct who distribute their policies through insurance brokers - usually the smaller independent ones rather than the big chains such as Swintons or wherever. The do not deal direct. I wont say my companies name 'cos i dont wat to break any rules or whatever about advertising/endorsing certain companies. To get hold of the product try phoning a few brokers in your area and ask if they have access to Broker Direct Assistance underwritten by RAC. If mod's will allow it, i'll happily post my companies phone number - unfortunately no web pages to advertise it!

The cover is good and you get the bright orange RAC van come out to you if you have to call them out rather than a "backstreet" type recovery truck - all the usual RAC benefits are included e.g. mesage forwarding, 15% off vehicle inspections etc.

Like i said, it's "vehicle based" i.e anyone driving the reg no you specify is covered in the event of a breakdown. The guy that started this thread was after cover for him and his spouse so he'd need 2 of these policies to cover both cars; but 2 x £68.25 still works out cheaper than buying just the one policy directly from RAC.

Again, all apologies if this just looks like a cheap ad - it's indented to be a pointer to say you can still get cover from a big brand name but by going through an affinity scheme such as this Broker Direct one. There's a few other ones about aranged by others but this is about the best one.

This is the product I was talking about.
If anyone wants any info PM me and we'll do it for £60.00 per year for anyone enquiring via MSE. I've had loads of really good tips/codes off this website so i'm happy to "put a bit back" as it were.
If you PM me with your Vehicle Make, Model, Year and e-mail address i'll send you back a personlised illustration with the full T&C's. The product is exactly as described above.

If response times are of considerable importance then AA are, in my experience, very impressive indeed - see my post in this thread , which the poster stating RAC were FAR superior never replied to - speaks volumes maybe:
