Giving A New Item To A Store Where It May Not Have Been Purchased

This is my first post so I am deeply sorry if this is in the wrong place and would appreciate it if someone could transfer this accordingly, if necessary.
I am not expecting anyone to give me a definite answer on this but if someone could share their experiences if anyone has done this before.
Basically, I have won a competition for a new item. I have absolutely no need for it and hence was considering selling it but I have received it today and it is still sealed (brand new) and I can't seem to get that many offers for the product.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if you could go to a local store and give the item to them as it is clearly brand new and never been opened? Would they give you the retail price or any price at all? Or do they just not accept goods in this way?
If anyone has any experiences then please let me know.
It is an electrical item by the way (a tablet).
Again, I am sorry if this is the wrong section (probably is) but I wasn't sure where to post this and I really wanted advice on this matter.
Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry if i've misunderstood but why would a retail shop by something from you at retail price when they can go to a wholesaler, buy it cheaper and that they know its new and they can send back if its faulty.
Your best bet is it sell it on ebay.0 -

Thanks for the reply.
I know how it sounds but just thought if they would buy it off me at say a reduced price perhaps or something. I don't know, it was just something that crossed my mind.
Ebay seems to be prone to scammers and I have had problems with them in the past. Seller fees and final value fees coupled with postage won't help my financial situation either.
Thanks for the input though.0 -
A small inderpendant shop may buy it off you at their wholesale price but no shop would buy it off you at the retail price... thats not really how shops work...0

so you entered a competition for a prize you did not want.
my first question is
why did you enter the competition in the first place?
the retails would have either donated the price to the competition organisers or the organisers purchased the prize.
so the item did not come from the retailer, so why should the retailer take it back.0 -

HI, sorry to keep bugging you but could you give me an idea of which small independent shops would buy it? Assuming you are not referring to cex or cash converters.
Thanks.0 -
Did you mean to take it back to a shop and pretend you had bought it from them and lost your receipt.
Or is this just me thinking that way;)Que Sera, Sera0 -

Ok, I didn't actually register for the competition per say. It was more of a maths quiz where we were told the top three students would win a prize. I never knew what the prize was and somehow ended up 1st place.
I know the retailer does not have to take it back and they would have no reason to. Don't get me wrong. I am not arguing that they should (doesn't really help that I posted this in consumer rights), I am just wondering if anyone had any experiences where this may have happened or where the store offered to buy it at the price of a refurbished one or something.
Please do not misundertsand me, I am not looking for documents that say they have to take the product. I am wondering whether this has ever happened.0 -
Well whats in your town centre, any indies at all. You onlyget trouble on ebay if you sell to scammers, ive not had a problem with selling or buying on ebay yet someone i know has had problems with buying. No shops(established shops) dont buy stock from joe bloggs who walks in off the street, how would they know its legit ?0

Well, pretending to buy it from them would usually mean either you have a record on a bank statement for proof of purchase, or they would have the other half of the sales receipt?
So, not really what I was aiming at. It would also be very dishonest (yes, this actually matters:A).0 -

Sorry but ebay is just not my thing. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Apologies for possibly being stupid but what do you mean by indies?0
