Jack's Diary

Hello MSE! I'm Jack, as some of you know and I have been giving my Mum lots of problems for the last few months and confusing lots of vets (I don't like Vets, they shave my fur!). My Mum thought it may be helpful if I kept a diary as it may help other owners down the line and she may get some tips in how to look after me (If one of you can recommend she feed me chips please) so I am happy and healthier. Mum also says she's not a vet, just a loving Mum who'd do anything for me :D

I am an 8 year old Scottie dog, I'm 9 next Saturday actually (Mum says she is baking me a carrot cake with cottage cheese icing). I have chronic Liver Cirrhosis caused by my body not being able to process copper. The Vet didn't think I'd still be here - showed her ha! But with a special diet of yummy home cooked food and special vitamins and herbs I'm not only here I'm bounding around the house like I used to be.

Lots of love
Jack

Mum made white fish and parsley for me today. She cooked lots of veggies and mashed potato and poached some white fish in milk. When it was cooked she thickened the milk with a little cornflour and added some fresh chopped parsley. Parsley is very good for liver she says. I have to have my food twice a day now and have a horrible tablet before it which Mum hides in some turkey. She thinks I haven't noticed but I'm not that daft. I think she's the daft one as I'll now only eat the most expensive stuff - none of this processed stuff for me hehe

She's stopped giving me those funny dog sticks as well that make my poo green and red from the colouring. I'm a bit annoyed about this because these were my favourites and I could make pretty poo patterns in the garden. She's cooked me a strange old biscuit concoction of grated carrot, egg, flour, oats and a dash of syrup. It's nice, but it's just not colourful!

Tomorrow she says she's taking me to the Pet Shop to buy me a Parka so I can go for a small walk again. I'm not very good at regulating my temperature now so I need to keep warm and the Parka looks great. Not so keen on the trainers she was looking at though, I'm putting my paw down there.

Anyway, need to go, human teenager is about to have her food and if I sit and look lovingly at her she may drop a chip :)
    Love

  • Hi Jack, Ben here.... sorry to hear about your trips to the vet (I hate them too).

I have problems with my tum but mum's worked out that I'm wheat intolerant and things are so much better now I'm on a different food too! (shame I can't have too many treats now tho').

It's my birthday in a couple of weeks and I'm going to be 11 or 12, mum's not quite sure (I used to live in a horrible house with no toys or treats - or even my own bed - but then I came to live with mum and things are great now - I'm really spoiled!:D).

Your cake sounds fab and I'm going to have to make sure mum reads your post as I've not had a cake for my birthday before (although I have pinched a few out of cupboards here & there:rotfl:).....

I think your diary is a great idea, Jack.

I'm so pleased you're feeling so much better. Your mum was really worried a while back and I told her to keep positive.

I had faith in you and bless your heart you didn't let us down :T

I hope you have a brill birthday and enjoy your cake :)

Ben, I hope you have a wonderful birthday too. How lovely that you've got such a brill Mum now to care for you and spoil you.

Love to both you boys xx

Hello! Thanks guys. Ben, I'll get Mum to post that recipe when she gets chance. It sounds yummy!

Dad took me shopping for a coat today while Mum was at work, for some reason he thought I'd need an XL Parka which says on the bag 'for German Shepherd, Dalmatian size dog'. Once Mum had finished laughing at me in my enormous coat she took me back to the pet shop and bought me one that actually fits me, its brilliant! It's got a hood and a pocket too! I've been promised a walk tomorrow! Can't wait!

I had Minced Beef with veggies and wholewheat pasta today with some Natural Yoghurt for dessert. Very nice. I was feeling so well today I even started to play fight with Bob (my Westie Brother). Anyway, worn out now so time to curl up on the sofa for a sleep and Mum will put some Zinc cream on my paws to make them nice and soft again. I've been so good today I've not worn my buster collar all day and I haven't licked my paws once!!

Today is a special day! I am 9 years old today! Mum is baking again, banana biscuits I believe and she has bought me one of those water fountain things for my present as I'm still being a bit stubborn and refusing to drink. I think I like the fountain, not keen on the word "CAT" on the front of it though, but I have had a little drink from it earlier.

She's been in the kitchen most of the day cooking meals for me. I counted 16 cartons into the freezer. From what I can see they are fish & parsley sauce with veg and potatoes, Minced beef with veg and wholewheat pasta, chicken with pasta, potatoes and vegetables and turkey with veg and brown rice. Mum was cursing she needs a bigger kitchen, Dad bought her a steamer to make things a bit easier but he says he can't make the kitchen bigger hehe

I'm eating really well now, I've put on another 1lb and my weight is now almost back to what it was before I became ill. If anything I'm a bit overweight now so I'm going to have my portion sizes cut down :-/

I have been told I may be going on holiday next week. With me being so poorly Mum and Dad and my human brother and sister haven't been anywhere this year so they are thinking of taking me to Wales with their shed on wheels thing. I won't be able to go far because I still haven't been able to have my annual inoculations and I'm a bit prone to picking things up but Mum says we can stay in the awning and read a book and it will be a nice change.

I go and see Kate my vet on Monday. This will be a sad day though. If you read Mum's other thread you will know that I owe everything to the PDSA who looked after me because Dad was made redundant a few months ago. Well, Dad has a new job! This is great, but it means I will have to say goodbye to Kate and I do like her lots (but don't tell her!) and Mum needs to find a new vet who knows about my illness now. I think Kate will be sad cos she likes me lots I've heard her tell mum, Mum likes her too and hopes that one day she can repay them all for making me better.

Anyway, off to sample these banana biscuits!
    Wags and licks

  • Hi Jack, Ben again ......

    Happy birthday!

Your mum sounds like she's been really busy cooking lots of yummy dinners for you (I'm drooling just thinking about them:)). I have my own drawer in the freezer as mum batch cooks my dinners too (I have veg - cabbage, broccoli, carrots and a wee bit of swede - and chicken in mine).

Ohhh, just thinking about food's made me really hungry.... it's nearly dinner time, I can't wait - mum calls me "bucket boy" sometimes as I am a bit of a food thief. I think that's a bit unfair - a boy's got to keep his strength up!

Enjoy the rest of your birthday and the trip in the shed on wheels (these humans are a bit odd sometimes;))!

PS, congratulations to your dad for finding a new job.

Look what I had after my tea!

    Screenshot2011-09-24at181708.png

Its banana, flour, egg, dash of milk, dash of natural yoghurt all blended up and cooked topped with some blended cottage cheese with a little flour in there to thicken with a few hundreds and thousands because a tiny bit of sugar wont hurt me. It was yummy! I shared a piece with Bob and he loved it too! There is plenty left for tomorrow as well :)

Jack, does Mum know if the birthday biscuit/cake is OK for people eating? Cos I might have to make it for me and share with Milly (patterdale) and Sasha and Tasha (the rats)

  • Hello Jack. Your cake looks great. It is my birthday around now but as my Mum doesnt know exactly when I have a gotcha day in December instead when I came to live here. My name is Holly and I am a Jack Russell. I live with my Mum and Dad, my bestest friend Lady who is also a jack Rusell, a Border Collie called Kam and we have just had a new dog who is a staffie called Pippin. I dont like her much as she is very bouncy and tries to steal my toys, Mum says it is because she has been in lots of different homes and kennels and has not learned to be well mannered. She is only here until she has a new home I hope thats soon.

I am ill too and have some called neural myotonia which no one has ever heard of including my vet. It was diagnosed by another vet called the neurologist. It makes me very tired and a bit grumpy so I only have a short walk in the morning and stay in when mum and dad take my friends out in the afternoon and evening. I can eat anything though and this is my favourite past time. Hee Hee.

I hope you add to your diary soon as we are enjoying reading it.
