UK citizens dont require a passport or visa to enter Ireland, but most carriers by air or sea now require some form of identification with photograph, usually a passport or driving license with photo.
it is best to check what form of ID is required with the individual airline, ferry company or travel agent before travelling.0 -
see if you have a passport.. but its out of date/expired.. could you still use it as photo id?0

you will definately need photo id for flying - Usually
- A valid passport
- A valid Government issued National Identity Card issued by a European Economic Area (EEA) country.
- National Identity Cards issued by the Government of Gibraltar.
- A valid European Economic Area (EEA) driving licence with photo, presented by a passenger whose place of birth is within the EEA is acceptable only for travel on internal flights within the UK, internal flights within Italy and UK-Republic of Ireland-UK.
- In accordance with Article 28(1) of the 1951 UN Convention, a valid UN Refugee Convention Travel Document issued by a Government in place of a valid passport is acceptable.
As for the budget, it depends on where you are staying and what type of accomodation you will be looking at?..0 -
If going to Southern Ireland and intending to fly there I would definitely suggest a valid passport. I know someone that was refused flight because he didnt have one and thought his drivers licence would do. He then had to get a boat to Belfast and travel down to Dublin by train.
If you fly into Northern Ireland and then travel down to the South you should be able to do it on photo ID other than a passport as they do not have passport control on the North/South border. Also travelling by sea to the North some of the ferry companies do not require photographic ID but beware - police in attendance may ask for this so it is always a good idea to carry some sort of photographic ID when travelling through ports."Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

I agree. A friend had the same thing happen going via Ryanair. You're very much dependent on the ground staff, and if they feel like it, they'll refuse you. A valid passport is far more dependable than a drivers's licence.0 -
I go over 5/6 times a year, never had a problem (no valid p/p at the moment).. I'd be pretty miffed if my photo driving license was refused seeing as its stated in their T+C's that they accept that to fly..
The examples of acceptable id I posted above was copied from the Ryanair site, so can't see why your friends were refused..0 -

I use my driv licence as photo ID and I don't know how I get away with it - it looks NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING like me.
i was about 5 stones lighter at the time and the software seems to elongate the pic for some reason, therefore making the face look longer and thinner than it really is.
