No Data Used But Virgin Charging 50p/ Day
Hi, I bought my Dad an Android phone to use with his Virgin pay as you go sim.
I deleted the apn settings so there was no data connectivity (there was no option to switch data off on the phone).
Since he checked his bill, he has been charged 50p/day for data. However they confirmed they can see that no data has been used ie his phone attempted to connect to the network but couldn't because I deleted the apn settings so failed to obtain connectivity.
Yet they are stating they won't refund because it is a feature of Android phones.
It seems they are saying anyone with a smart phone will be charged data - surely this can't be correct - they can see no data was use.
Should be be entitled to a refund just because the phone attempted to connect to data but failed (because I deleted the apn settings)?
Does anyone have a complaints contact? He got nowhere with the call centre help.

Are you sure the 50p/day is not a tariff feature?0
-
Definitely not - he's been with Virgin over 5 years and the 50p charge only started when he got the new phone.0

Get them to remove Data on system0 -
I used to work as a handset tester for a telco - trust me there was no option to switch data off. I upgraded the software last week and now there is an option to switch data off.
He's removed data now from his profile however what I am really looking for is can he push further for a refund for the 50p/day charge when they can clearly see (and already confirmed) that no data was used?0 -
You could go with tmobile seen 1 year sims with unlimted internet 500mb download but unlimted surfing for 25 pounds for the year .
Not sure how tmobile compare with prices over virgin on there call rates0 -
Deleting the APN won't work on Virgin, as they use a system which automatically routes requests to the correct APN. (This sort of APN interception is common elsewhere )
Having said that, there is a known issue with Virgin's billing that causes customers with a data plan to occasionally be charged the daily rate. So its a possibility the charges are an aspect of this. However, you wouldn't expect them to be occurring daily.0 -
I had the same problem with Vodafone before I bought an Android and added data. I made 1 internet connection on my old Nokia and from that moment on, I got a 50p per day charge. They cancelled internet on the system and refunded me.0

Menu => Settings => Wireless and networks => Mobile network settings
Untick 'Data enabled'
Option wasn't there - only national or roaming options. There was no option for data off/data enabled tick box until I upgraded the software to 2.3.3. Trust me, I am an expert when it comes to mobile phones.
However this isn't my problem as data has now been disabled network side.
What I really want is a refund from Virgin but they said no so I am looking for help on making a complaint!0
