You get a personal tax allowance.
You get get tax credits, Childrens tax credits.
    You get family allowance.

Please add all that to you 20K and come back with a new number.

20k includes all of the above.

plus those on 50k get a personal allowance.
those on 50k get child benefit.

it must be oh so hard getting by day to day on £50/60/70/80k+ a year.
[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Not really, but those who get that much earn it, same as you earn your 20k. This is not about relative income levels; it's about the effects of raising tax.

The fact remains that the last government's punitive tax hikes (and let's face it, they were a political stunt aimed at people like you) are counterproductive. They are pushing high tax payers overseas, and that simply means the government is no longer getting tax revenue from them. I am a case in point.

So who do you think is going to have to cough up instead? Yeah, that's right, love. You.

So it wasn't a very well thought out strategy, was it?

People go on about the 50% tax rate as though it affects everyone, but in reality it affects the top 1% of earners in this country.

If they want to p*ss off and find another country to live in thats fine with me.

The majority of lower and middle income families pay about 34% of their income in tax, yet the higher income families only pay 31%.

It's about time this balance was redressed.

But that top 1% provide 27.7% of all income tax revenue. so that 34% would need to become around 45% to make up the shortfall.

I don't think you can read too much from a sample size of one ;)

I still think it should be withdrawn mind - tax should be a fair progressive system IMO not a tool for spiteful people to make a point.

I assume you're planning to visit this other country for surgery if the need arises?

    No, thought not.

I don't look at tax specifically but at the end result - quality of life. And for me quality of life is to do with space, climate, lifestyle and being able to afford a reasonable house without having every bit of spare income eaten up by bills.
For me, Australia ticks all the boxes. Discounting the spiders that is! I would emigrate in a heartbeat but I wouldn't make the point system. Shame this country isn't so choosy.

canada ticks all my boxes especially Alberta
tax rate 10% and no GST or PST (one of them)
so i am off there in the next couple years
already got the yes just have to sort my kids out and go

    cant wait so darn excited
there are some downsides but not so many as i thought and i do love the lifestyle over there
    63 mortgage payments to go.

    Zero wins 2016 😥

I do like Canada; nice country, nice people, sensible taxation - what's not to like.

If HMG don't get their act together, this brain drain that they are creating is going to really bite us in the future.

  • I know Bendix, supporting those poor people like one of my friends. Husband left her 6 months ago, has three children, husband was a 'middle income' earner. The state feels so sorry for her now that her monthly household income is higher than ours, she said she has never had it so good, no intention of finding a job herself as there is no point and she is right!

And you earn over £100,000? Baloney!

Sorry but this is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

We have a household income of just over £20k, we are a family of 4, and we live quite a good life thanks.

I'm sorry but if you cannot live on £50k a year then you have seriously overstretched yourself.

People go on about the 50% tax rate as though it affects everyone, but in reality it affects the top 1% of earners in this country.

How do you figure low earners pay less tax. And you are telling me, that a combined income + tax credits etc, you have a family of 4 living a GOOD life? Define good for me.

I never said you can't live without at least £50k, and I was referring to pre-tax. But let's be real here. On 20k a year, you how can you afford a place to live for 4 people, food, bills, occasional shopping, evenings out, holidays etc. You're saying £5k /yr per person buys a GOOD life?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but if you can live a GOOD life in the UK for £20k, I'de like to know where so I can stop wasting my money here!

FYI, you say £20k includes all your credits etc. Seriously, please break down your expenses for us since I simply don't believe it.

    I'm going to estimate here:

£20k /yr = £1666 / month (assuming this is your take home pay)
Rent - £700 (at least right?)
    Food - £600 (4 people!)
    Bills - £100
Total Basic Living cost = £1,400

That leaves less than £300 to pay for a car, shopping, holidays, savings etc. And This is assuming of the £20k you earn, you keep £20k due to some tax credits etc. Where's your tax contribution?

Anyone here ever considered leaving the UK to avoid the ridiculous tax rates?

I'm quite interested in hearing both sides here. Why would you consider/not consider moving?

They are not as ridiculous as you might think.

And secondly if you think this would be the answer to your problems you're assuming that you won't be packing your negativity if you do choose to do so.
