Turning off data roaming is sufficient, although some people say you should do a lot more - totally unnecessary in my experience.0

If she has no intention/need of the phone's features while away it's worth just taking an old/basic handset instead. I took an old nokia on holiday this summer safe in the knowledge that it wouldn't be on the internet (and if I lost it on the beach it wouldn't matter!).0

The trouble with that good idea is the 1) it is a good idea 2) the poster won't be able to whinge in a few weeks time about roaming charges 3) the French will not know that the tourist has an iphone.
They do have iphones in France don't they? perhaps somebody could check

Seeing as the average french worker has a standard of living just short of double ours for working less hours I would say so.
But then again they stand up for themselves a bit.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Only if she manages to pass the get out clauses, report the loss within 24hrs, don't leave the handset unattended, sand or water damage not included, claims just before a relase of a newer model not allowed either.

Just turn of data roaming and mobile data. I've seen reports of people saying their phone still used data after turning off data roaming, but never heard anyone say that their phone used data with mobile data turned off.0
