Likely a stupid/simple question . Have installed the hub .... working
( or you would not be reading this)
Last Router was a Linksys and I set up passwords to protect my bandwidth.
This new hub/wireless router has a 8 letter password on a sticker .
Used that to log on with a laptop ( wireless) .
Is there any point messing up the default system or more simply is my connection secure.

Hi,
I am awaiting my hub delivery but I was told to phone 0800 0731685 OR 0800 953 9500 ( sunday hours 10-5) to get help if I needed it.
I know I will need help.
See what they have to say.

I ordered mine Tues , they said it would arrive Thurs , it did. But by courier, so it was early evening.I have had four routers over the years . Linksys /Net Gear and Belkin all promised . plug and play!! But this is the first one that was really really simple.
Set up paper work is written for us idiots , easy diagrams.
When required , yes ring the number for activation, you will need your password ( account details)Plug out again , plug back in , watch the colours ...... then informed it would take up to 10 mins to activate , it took far less.
You need to have handy the 8 letter on the back of hub ............ not like me who first entered 'change me' as my password!!!!
Then all is running .
I am thinking that the connection is secured as you would need the 8 letters to log on . so just want confirmation .0 -
your connection is secure if when you connect to the wifi (for the first time) you are asked for the passkey ie the WPA2 passkey
if you connect and it never asked you for a passkey you need to turn on WPA2 and set a passkey, idealy this passkey should not be 8 letters but should be anything upto 63 charecters eg: hfu4774%5%jhdgwaFWAjefujh - that is a good one.0 -

Yes , asked . so am secure .
Can see why the Pentagon needs a mega secure password , but do I ?0 -
Same answerdo I really need to ?
If those neighbours who can see my available connection listed as Virginmadia ********* still could not log on without the 8 digits.
I take it the 8 random letters are specific to my and only my hub.0 -

i would still change it
I also prefer to turn off broadcast SSID0 -
I wouldn't bank on them being unique to your hub.
When we had our Plusnet internet installed, our router password also worked on the three other Plusnet internet connections in my area.
Turning off broadcasting simply means people don't know your connection exists, so it's much more difficult to try and hack it.
It's worth it for the added security, I think.0 -
I personally would change the router password (the one you use to log into its settings)
the WPA2 passkey to something way longer than 8 letters (use something like the example in my last post)
and I would also change the SSID to something less information revealing (ie not Virginmedia-zsjkah but something unique but impersonal ie definitely not number_101s_broadband_from_virginmedia)
there is no extra security in hiding your SSID but it would stop anyone with a phone seeing your wifi and trying to guess your passkey, so I'll leave hiding your SSID up to you.
remember just write the new password, WPA2 passkey and SSID on a post-it note and stick it to the back of the superhub for future reference if you want.0
