on a side note and slightly off topic but you should uninstall trend micro antivirus since you have avast installed0

Indeed, I always intended doing so; it's just that I didn't understand some of this advice but will do once I get time to do some reading on it.So, what did you do in the end? Remember that giving feedback adds to our knowledge when we've tried to help
Actually I never installed it in the first place, although it keeps popping up asking if I'd like to. I might sell the machine, and thought it could be attractive for a potential purchaser. (I expect hoots of stifled derision when I tell you that this assumption is based entirely on the fact this is the best part of 1GB's worth of softwareon a side note and slightly off topic but you should uninstall trend micro antivirus since you have avast installed ) 0 ) 0

When I got round to reading this all again I got stuck on your last suggestion and I've been waiting until you are online to reply. As you've not logged in for over a fortnight now I'll have to pursue some of the other suggestions.....So, what did you do in the end? Remember that giving feedback adds to our knowledge when we've tried to help
I navigated to "Program Data" but it just contains an Adobe file.scheming_gypsy wrote: »It's got program data and Microsoft but not 'windows' by the look of that.
Just do, start > run > C:\ and then manually navigate to it and see how far down the folder structure you can get
I've now got the a/d bar on Windows Explorer but when I run what you suggested it tries to open it in Chrome! What is going on?

not sure why it's trying to open it in Chrome (but i need a wee and always lose the ability to think when i need a wee)... but if Program Data only has an Adobe file; click on tools > folder options > view > and stick a tick in the 'show hidden files' box, as other folders may be hidden.
Although rather than doing it in explorer, try straight from start > run0

XP doesn't have a Program Data folder, only Vista onwards. XPs is application data, located at:
 "C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data"
Where [username] is your username, or choose "All Users".
You might need to "unhide" folders to see this. This is done by clicking "Tools>FolderOptions>View and ticking Show hidden folders"
Windows does not regonise "white space" as in, the spacebar, in a filepath, it assumes that is where the command terminates unless you put it in " and ".0

The option was already selected.scheming_gypsy wrote: »but if Program Data only has an Adobe file; click on tools > folder options > view > and stick a tick in the 'show hidden files' box, as other folders may be hidden.

As for 'run', I didn't understand if Rob Tang meant put the whole lot in inverted commas....

yeah you mentioned it further up the post, i forgot about that till i scrolled up. I think it's simply a case of duff instructions that you've been given as the 'windows' folder doesn't exist. You could try creating it to see what happens.0

Seriously, I'll repeat, and, as bold seems to be the option of choice for some posters who wish to get their point across, here goes:
There is NO ProgramData folder in XP. You are wasting your time.0

Sorry but I did not see where it stated that apart from in your post #17 which I missed as it took so long to prepare the screenshot for #18.Seriously, I'll repeat, and, as bold seems to be the option of choice for some posters who wish to get their point across, here goes:

Ahh, now I understand Gypsy's post #4!Windows does not regonise "white space" as in, the spacebar, in a filepath, it assumes that is where the command terminates unless you put it in " and ".
But I don't know what I'm looking for here (RSMR is empty BTW)
